Thanks Simon. I didn't mean to insult your work in any way! :)

I feel like I have made all kinds of sounds with Kaleidoscope but the majority of them havn't sounded drone like at all, mainly because I keep the tempo up higher and typically go for more rhythmic / melodic type images.

Kaleidoscope can sound many many different ways only using white noise, once get start feeding it your own input or making your own images the sky is the limit.

I see what you are saying about it maybe having a signature sound using extremely high feedback settings but that's only a tiny fraction of the sounds possible. Try to change up the tempo, experiment with different rhythmic and melodic patterns and tunings, try mixing up your modulation modes and utilizing both input and output modulation, lower your feedback settings and play with string resonater dampening settings. I have really good luck with a high EQ value on the lowpass 12db filter and good luck at all EQ settings on the bandpass. Just some suggestions.

Drone may not be the right word. Ambient, maybe. Signature sound, definitely. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise, as it always sounds like a bunch of resonators being forced into a scale. I'm not saying I dislike that sound, not at all. I'm just questioning the cost for that one type of sound.

That description makes more sense to me. Though remember you can also use it to recreate all sorts of effects with external sound input where you wouldn't be able to recognize the signature sound easily vs white noise patches.

I may try to make a dance track with only Kaleidoscope for the synth/bass parts. The question is should I try and do it with or without external effects... I am thinking with but without presents its own interesting challenge.

I think Andrew would do a much better job than I would at that though :hihi:

Maybe some tempo synced side-chain gating would be a good start...just tossing that out there...

No worries :)
I just think you did some selective listening here when reading your description of that one smeary drone sound. KS is either an effect or a synthesizer, as it can create sound on it's own without any external input. Depending on how the resonators resonate with the input source (or not), the sound of KS can totally vary within the scope of being a resonator or a granular delay (FIR-mode) of course.

Granular synthesis sounds like granular synthesis, a vocoder sounds like a vocoder, subtractive synthesis sounds like subtractive synthesis, FM sounds like FM, the pope sounds like the pope.

I guess I was looking for an effect that would make a supersaw sound like the pope. But all I ended up with was 909 kick drums that sounded like papal resonators.

Yes, but does a resonator s£€t in the woods?

Papal Resonators! LMAO!!!

deastman: I approve of you gear list :hihi:

So yeah, I think I am going to need to use alot of external audio input for the dance track.I need to get a more "compact" sound than I seem to be able to get only using white noise as an input source.

I think Kaleidoscope will mainly be useful making crazy rhytmic patches and as a creative effect / coloring tool for dance stuff, which is perfectly fine. Someone feel free to prove me wrong :)

I'll just use KS to do my washing up, and maybe impress some customers.

Maaan, KS is hypnotic! I have just barely scratched the surface, very barely, and already I feel like I'm on another planet of sound! Here is an example of a sketchy effort:

This brass-heavy orchestral music is actually a field of frogs, recorded in Poland, running through a waveform I made of a turkey gobbling. Amazing!!
