Rewire just does nothing

OK I bought Reason Limited for cheap just as a way to try it out, never really tried rewire before in Tracktion. So I inserted a rewire device just as I would any plugin and it loaded up an instance of Reason, first I had to get rid of the stupid pre built project it always seems to start with, then I just loaded an empty project and loaded up Subtracktor. Tried playing a few notes, nothing is happening. There is definitely midi playing but Reason is making no sound, what else do I need to do?

If you fiddle with the midi bus thingy you should see the midi channels and outputs you can route to and from.
When I use reason I normally dispense with the reason mixer and select the input output channels from the audio interface. You can then select the outputs and mix within Tracktion as normal.
I take it you know how to hit tab and plumb the wires within Reason?
Saving a template of your favourite reason racks prewired to the interface helps.
I'm on an ancient Reason 5 so I hope this still applies.

I assumed if I just drag in a synth it gets basic wiring done automatically no? At least it seems to respond to my midi controller if I do that in standalone so why it doesn't rewired into Tracktion I don't know. What was annoying was I found even if I created a blank template it had hidden away a bunch of useless effects on the master channel (not sure why this is on top of the instrument channel either).
