U&I does things their own way... let's just keep it at that.

seems I accidentally edited and overwrote my previous comments with the "retina display update" post...jackmazzotti wrote: Well imho that's their own fault and shouldn't limit you and the rest of the computer music community in anyway.
basically I said: I'm not inclined to do things exactly the same way as in any of the the other image-oriented audio softwares out there... I think the whole "Image-based control of sound" paradigm has a lot of room to grow, and I think I have made very significant independant contributions towards advancing this art. I have many more ideas on this, and will continue to do so to the best of my ability.
...but out of respect for my peers, I don't want to try to replace existing tools with the same functionality. Especially in cases where I was involved in some way with the other products. U&I Software are great guys, and are my friends.
I think MS is great at being MS.
I think KS is great at being KS.
I don't think KS should try to be MS.
To be perfectly blunt, I feel the areas and directions I want to focus on and explore with KS are more interesting for the type of applications I am interested in pursuing... But that is as it should be. As the designer of the product I should feel that way about my own product. I designed it the way I did bc this is something I want to use myself.
Some basic image editing functionality that is public domain and found within all common image editors like photoshop etc might be possible the future. But I also think there is not much reason to try to replace Photoshop with KS, when we already have Photoshop. I think it makes more sense, as many have suggested, to try to find ways to make it easier to share resources between Photoshop (or whatever else) and KS. And we have some great ideas already in this area. This will happen.

Please don't take my comments the wrong way. I know KS is a major milestone in computer generated music. The major advantages of native KS image editing is the ability to sculpt and create sounds in realtime that off line editors cannot do.Galbanum wrote:seems I accidentally edited and overwrote my previous comments with the "retina display update" post...jackmazzotti wrote: Well imho that's their own fault and shouldn't limit you and the rest of the computer music community in anyway.

I think the next milestone with KS would be to make it a more playable instrument, with all or some of the aspects already mentioned in this thread concerning the real time tweaking of parameters. KS is an image/waveform/tuning file sampler with lots of possibilities to tweak the samples, like in a DAW or audio sampler we can use a plethora of hyper-specialized external tools to modify the samples, so imho we don't need image editing tools inside KS at this moment.

I don't at all. I know you are a passionate guy like me, and are simply excited about the possiblities.jackmazzotti wrote: Please don't take my comments the wrong way. We have some ideas on these topics that will be in in "our way" and we hope to show them to you soon in a 1.1.0 version. Then we can talk again about remaining room for improvement...
KS is a VERY long term product. This is NOT some "flavor of the month" product. I think it will still be relevant 100 years from now. So we have plenty of time to grow and evolve...
My message just means to communicate that I fully intend to be aware of my peers as we continue grow and evolve KS. Nothing will prevent us from going to where we need to go, but we will also be careful to do so in a manner that is respectful of everything that came before us -- even when most of the technology involved is not unique and there is plenty of prior art in such areas...

A fast question about FilterForge. I downloaded the demo, which looks great, but one thing I don't see (though perhaps it's obvious) is how to export chosen (or created) images in the 1024x1024 PNG format necessary for KS. Looks to me like the size doesn't go past 600x600. Am I missing something??

That's just the default image size. You set the image size when you create a new image from scratch.jtenney wrote:A fast question about FilterForge. off topic: finally we are getting some cool snow in the Washington DC area today! Cool! I like snow.
keep telling myself I'm gonna buy cross-country skiis for the couple times per year where I could actually use them... totally wish I had some right now!!!
such a wonderful sport! such beauty to be found skiing through the slient woods in falling snow!
if you don't find inspiration in nature, you simply are not spending enough time in nature!
the parallels to KS should be obvious... but I leaned a lot from trees when designing B2 too, for example... strange, but true...

Very pretty, maybe a little too long, but I couldn't resist. Just 4 Kaleidoscopes with a little post-processing.

I'd add a little Aether or B2 (or other verb), but it's very interesting! Great tonal aleatoric piece...

I've uploaded both Demo and Full versions of build 380. (This is still labeled as 1.0.1.)
This build makes improvements to the retina display issues. The GUI should should be more responsive now when used on retina display macs, and the CPU usage should be less.
GUI responsiveness in general in still better on Windows than it is on OSX, and we are still exploring this, but we think this build should now be usable on retina display Macs.
Please try it and let us know what you find....
There is no change to the windows version.
OSX DEMO:

Processing a field recording I recorded in a Seoul temple some years ago - a Puja performed by +/-70 nuns - with Kaleidoscope, stepping through various presets from the same family all using the same custom images and various tuning files (Scala/custom). I left the original recording untouched (no RX4-denoising, there are some loud fan noises and a water spring, but they do nice things to the resonators).
