Bizarre, with the previous version of Hive I've had one single instance reach 50 % on my 2 core I7 which also has 4 Gig ram... Better now but no way I could reach 42 instances with a hit of 20 - 30 % for simple three note chords. I cloned Hive and fed it the same simple pattern from a "MIDI Out" module and by 3 instances I had passed 50 %... :( Other u-he plugins are very well behaved in FL Studio 11.1.1 though, Zebra 2 with 2 oscs set to 11 detuned voices thorugh 2 filters use way less CPU. Strange only some of us has whatever this issue can be.
I'd wager it has to do with your CPU. It might help if you post exactly what you have for the u-he folks to debug. I'm guessing this is an SSE (or other optimization) detection/usage problem. George's CPU is very recent as an i7.

Eh... I guess in he bigger scheme of things, yes, I guess... it is over 3 years old though, which in my mind is old in computing terms (longest I've ever had a CPU + mobo setup). I bought it Q1 2011, 2 days after release, so it was literally the first Sandy Bridge configuration that was released. That is now (iirc) 2 generations old. The architecture and lithography has gone through more than 3 new iterations, so... err... ye. Not sure what my point is :P

I remember reading and contributing to topics in the computer forum at the time and I got my own i7 2600 shortly after you did. Best music related purchase I ever made. :)

I have hive too and can also run many instances without worrying about cpu killing.

:)

The key there is Sandy Bridge: it is the first revision of Intel processors with AVX for floating-point instruction optimization. Things are going to get really interesting with AVX512 planned for processors this year (Skylake and Knights Landing).

My CPU is an i5 3570, 3.40GHz quad core, still decent VFM and performance by today's stadard and I can get 35%+ CPU with a single instance of Hive in FL 11. Also tested on a 3yo laptop with a crappy Pentium mobile CPU and it was taking a lot more than FL synths, 30 to 50% CPU on average.

Hi everyone. I'm continuing to enjoy playing with Hive. I have a slight cosmetic issue to report. Mac OS X, Logic Pro X. Auditioning patches with logic's Musical Typing window. I was playing Xenos' Ambient and Film Scores patches, which are terrific.

If you open a context menu while notes are being held, the menu selection highlight will flicker. The menu functions correctly if you make a selection, so it seems to be a cosmetic issue. The problem reproduces with the context menus in the oscillators, filter selection, and effects menus such as distortion type.

The expected behavior is that the menus act the same way as they do when notes are not being held, which is correct.

Here's a movie that shows the issue.

So i have tested Hive for couple days. I really like it, especialy how easy to use and that everything you control is in one window (at first i had doubts because it looked confusing). I like the sound character, its lush, its clean, due to that synth sound sits well in the mix. i dare to say it can easely be to go synth for me. I have already Dune 1/2, Spire, Virus Ti, Massive, Harmor, Z3ta 2, Sytrus, Toxic Biohazard, ease of use is really faster with Hive, i think its because all the accessible controls.

I almost decided to buy it, and still deciding. It has different character, lush, smooth but at the same time agressive wich i need & wich i love. But then again its a synth that does not do anything special, but the user interface, preset browsing, are really great to use. Its a pure workhorse synth.

I do have to mention i miss at least 1 or 2 additional ADSR.

Futhermore i have tested the synth more today, focused on CPU use...hmmm i have i7 4790k CPU, FL Studio latest version, Focusrite Saffire pro 24 with 512ms buffer size. I ran 2 oscillators with x16 unison and detune. I could only run 48 instances. I did comparison with same settings on Spire, i ran 54 instances. And spire is already known that it takes alot of CPU.

Post

Don't you think 48 instances are enough at all. I don't know what you are doing that you need that many instances but actually you have always have to find a compromise between quality and cpu usage.

I have an 3770k and never had a bottleneck from cpu usage but I only use 10-12 instances.

Definatly not, i dont use so much instances (20-30 most of the time), tho i have 40-70 active chanels with various sounds. It was just a quick run to see how much CPU it takes, after all "very low CPU usage" is marked as a feature :)

Well, we've measured Hive against all unison-centric synths we know, and it regularly performed better than any of those with 4 oscillators at 8x unison each. Maybe you got the number of assigned vocies wrong, e.g. played a 3-note chord on one synth and an 8-note chord on each instance of Hive?

Naturally, we haven't tested on each and every architecture, each and every buffer size, sample rate whatsoever. But the results were consistent.

I used same chord melody for both synths

guys, im a old user of alot of vsti from trance category. Sylenth1, Spire, Helix, Serum, Nexus, Vanguard, V-Station, and now Hive. What i can say - as about quality for our time, it's Spire/Serum/Sylenth1/Hive. From them i love Serum & Hive, they both can do a great work. I like Spire but this synth can sound good only with other external fx's, i mean the Spire stereo signals is worst, it has a great sound engine but anyway to see a great result from this synth u need to use some of stereo fx's to do the sound more panoramic. And another bad thing in Spire - it's a big CPU loading. As for Serum & Hive - it's much lower. I can load 4 Spire, in same time i can load 12 Hive's!!! About Serum - 8 Serum's. I made some tests earlier but dont have a time to post it on youtube. Maybe a bit later.
