Do you have a favourite song to cry to? The kind that always chokes you off, no matter how many times you listen to it? Even if they are ever so sappy you would not necessarily admit liking them to anybody else? And I do not mean just some music - something whose lyrics hold just as much meaning as its tune...

Personally, I find these very effective if I am in the mood:

Joni Mitchell: BOTH SIDES, NOW
("It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all")

Janis Ian: AT SEVENTEEN
("I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens")

ONE IS THE LONELIEST NUMBER

The Carpenters: CLOSE TO YOU [They Long To Be]
("Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?")

Any additions?

[somehow I posted this to the wrong thread first time. o_O]

Lara's Theme from "Doctor Zhivago."

Oh, stop teasing! If I hadn't seen the movie, the song would just be "some nice fake Russian folk music."

[edit] On reflection, the "lyrics" to this song are nothing special. It's the tune and the scene and the situation it brings back to mind... so maybe I should retract, since this choice doesn't strictly fit the criteria. :-)

Hands of Ash

Leaves of Autumn
"the curtain draws open on secrets of the dusk
singing by the river our voices raised up
the trees in the orchard bend toward the sound
of leaves in the autumn that fall upon the ground
weathered in winter, borne up in spring
dying in the summer, till the rains come again
we dance in the garden and wait for the call
of leaves in the autumn that fall upon the ground
we drink from our cup, the sweet poison burns
one dies for longing, and one dies to learn
the flowers of passion rage all around
as leaves in the autumn fall upon the ground"

and some other stuff. Their songs always reminds me of a lost love i once had, as they had been our songs

Number one song making me cry is still Sinatra´s version of "My Way".
Then there´s "friendly man" from a rather unknown end 60´s group called "the free design". (just happened today again .. sat in my car, drove, and the tears came. wonderful feeling)

The carpenters do it to me as well, and lately it´s "our mutual friend" from the Divine Comedy.

All in all there are quite some songs making me cry .. and i hope this will never ever change.

oh .. and of course Donkey Tugger´s "Barnsley" .. i cried rivers to this song.

Joni Mitchell,

I Had A King

Probably the best song about loneliness ever

Anything by Busted makes me cry...

nothing, I have no soul. Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World does affect me a bit - reminds me of my late Grandad (he wasn't much of a singer or anything, he just like Ol'Sachmo, or Sasquach or whatever his name was).

Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War

paul simon

Rene and Georgette Magritte,
With their dog after the war,
Returned to their hotel suite,
And they unlocked the door.
Easily losing their evening clothes,
They danced by the light of the moon,
To The Penguins, The Moonglows,
The Orioles, and The Five Satins,
The deep forbidden music,
They'd been longing for,
Rene and Georgette Magritte,
With their dog after the war.
Rene and Georgette Magritte,
With their dog after the war,
Were strolling down Christopher Street,
When they stopped in a men's store,
With all of the mannequins dressed in the style,
That brought tears to their immigrant eyes.
Just like The Penguins, The Moonglows,
The Orioles, and The Five Satins,
The easy stream of laughter,
Flowing through the air,
Rene and Georgette Magritte,
With their dog après la guerre.
Side by side,
They fell asleep.
Decades gliding by like Indians,
Time is cheap.
When they wake up they will find,
All their personal belongings,
Have intertwined.
Rene and Georgette Magritte,
With their dog after the war,
Were dining with the power élite,
And they looked in their bedroom drawer.
And what do you think,
They had hidden away,
In the cabinet cold of their hearts?
The Penguins, The Moonglows,
The Orioles, and The Five Satins.
For now and ever after,
As it was before,
Rene and Georgette Magritte,
With their dog after the war.

Okay, got one that stands the test of meaningful vocals. [Edit: with a nudge from Emerald Tablet's latest]

Don McLean's "Vincent." aka "Starry Starry Night."

For all that it's sappy, that is some heavy stuff. So simple. Seems to me the writing and performance contain genuine emotion, not just maudlin sentimentality.

Everybody Hurts - REM - was released just when my life was totally shite - life is all good now tho! :)

When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
when you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on.
Don't let yourself go, everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes.

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along.
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
if you feel like letting go, (hold on)
when you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on.

Everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends.
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand.
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
when you think you've had too much of this life to hang on.

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes.
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on.
Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on. Hold on, hold on.

Oh I'm fillin' up!!

AT SEVENTEEN
(Janis Ian)

I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
And high school girls with clear skinned smiles
Who married young and then retired
The valentines i never knew
The friday night charades of youth
Were spent on one more beautiful
At seventeen i learned the truth

And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces
Desperately remained at home
Inventing lovers on the phone
Who called to say - come dance with me
And murmured vague obscenities
It isn't all it seems at seventeen

A brown eyed girl in hand me downs
Whose name i never could pronounce
Said - pity please the ones who serve
They only get what they deserve
The rich relationed hometown queen
Marries into what she needs
With a guarantee of company
And haven for the elderly

So remember those who win the game
Lose the love they sought to gain
In debentures of quality and dubious integrity
Their small-town eyes will gape at you
In dull surprise when payment due
Exceeds accounts received at seventeen

(instrumental)

To those of us who knew the pain
Of valentines that never came
And those whose names were never called
When choosing sides for basketball
It was long ago and far away
The world was younger than today
When dreams were all they gave for free
To ugly duckling girls like me

We all play the game, and when we dare
We cheat ourselves at solitaire
Inventing lovers on the phone
Repenting other lives unknown
That call and say - come on, dance with me
And murmur vague obscenities
At ugly girls like me, at seventeen

BOTH SIDES, NOW
(Joni Mitchell)

Rows and floes of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons ev'rywhere
I've looked at clouds that way

But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on ev'ryone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living ev'ry day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all
I've looked at life from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all

...oh, and Sinatra's My Way absolutely belongs here!
