Was is a conscious decision to have a new track created above the selected track? T1-T4 weren't like that. I tried not to let it bother me, but it get's annoying having to always move the bottom track up above the new ones I make.
Does anyone else feel like they should be created below the selected track again?
If it was something that was asked for, then maybe a key command that creates new track below selected track.

I know what you mean. It does the same thing when you add plugins from the right click menu and select "Add new plugin." The plugin goes to the left of the existing one. My workaround is to use the duplicate action keyboard shortcut. I set that to D. Select a track and hit D and the new track seems to be added after it. But then you need to clear the clips if you actually wanted a blank track.

Thanks for the tip. I suppose I can use that command on the mysteriously added blank track at the bottom of most my edits in order to have new tracks created like I want.gigazaga wrote:I know what you mean. I would still encourage people to chime in if they think it should go back to the old way.

I'm finding with 6.0.23 and 5.4.3 that when a track is highlighted, a new one appears above it. If no tracks are highlighted, new ones appear at the bottom.

Oh wow. I never tried it without a track selected. Thanks! I guess that's good enough for me. A little more clarification on where the new track appears.
This is on 64-bit Windows 8.1, T 6.0.23 32-bit version.
Method 1. Right-click a track, select "Create a new track"
Result - Always above the track that was right-clicked on
Method 2. Using the Tracks button and clicking "Create a new track" OR using ctrl-T
a. With NO tracks selected
Result - After all the other tracks
b. With ONE track selected
Result - Above the selected track
c. With MULTIPLE tracks selected
Result - Above the lowest highlighted track

that looks not very consistent.
there is one behaviour that would make sense to me:
1) when no track is selected, the new track is added at the bottom, as it is now
2) when one or more tracks are selected, the new track gets added below the selection.
simple and clear.

With 2) it is possible to highlight non-adjacent tracks. Though I don't know why one would.

in the scenario of adding tracks, i would choose a position (aka track in this case) in the project and press the key command for adding a track.
so basically it comes down to 1) no track selected or 2) one track selected
it's common behaviour in all daws i know, that tracks are inserted below a selected one.
i would really appreciate to know from tracktion devs, why they chose the behaviour we find in tracktion right now.
in the scenario of adding tracks, i would choose a position (aka track in this case) in the project and press the key command for adding a track.

There's another possible complication: tagging.
I've created an Edit with eight tracks and given them all tags. Some I've given two tags. When I select Show Only Tagged Tracks and choose one or more tags, if I then create a new track, the new track doesn't show up because it doesn't have a tag, so I need to unclick the Show Only Tagged Tracks to see it.
I did wonder if the track ought to be automatically given the same tag as the others, but there could be more than one tag chosen. That made me wonder if the user should then be given a list of current tags to choose from (including a "none of the above" option, or something).
I can't decide on an ideal way for this to behave.

Right. This could be a second selection at the bottom of the browser Tracks tab - "Include Untagged."
This would be helpful when adding Tracks as you pointed out. It would also help when tagging an Edit with a lot of tracks to check that you actually got them all.
