I've been losing sleep comparing the Midi Piano Keyboard (MPK) in Drumset Editor with the Input Midi Filter (IMF).
I can see that IMF affects imported midi and live feeds whereas MPK affects just live feeds, but leaving aside the velocity layer and velocity transformation functions in IMF, and just thinking about the mapping, is there a live feed mapping scenario where you would use MPK rather than IMF?

Well, personally I don't do that
. Simply put, the MPK is there so that you can create any kind of drumset, so you may technically use MDrummer to create something else than drums. But just for mapping I'd stick with MIDI filters. It lets you ignore any MIDI and just focus on drum types, which are generally much more "obvious".

Ok, thanks.
So for instance, I could have my rhythm all set up then quickly assign with MPK (without having to muck about in MIDI filters) a weird 'scratch' or 'effect' for example, that could be triggered live on channel 10 as MD is playing.

Yes, for example like that. I'd still recommend using the defaults even in this case (there are drum types for effects etc.), but you can do that of course.
