Maybe this?
...)FMDRIVE is a VST SYNTH based on the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive YM2612 FM sound chip. Yes from those who made the legendary early DX7 crunchy sounding FM soundchip!
It contains a ton of features that makes it easier to program than before and covers every unique particularity of the chip like:
PCM, SSG EG, Special & CSM mode, Optional Model 1 distortion (ladder effect) and even some circuit bending options...
You can import and export: .tfi presets, dumps from emulators and even some compatible HOOT dumped voices (PC88 and compatiblekl X68000...)

Excellent but Not expensive. Have him check the soundcloud examples.

Plogue chipsounds covers the Atari and NES. Unlike a lot of other chiptunes-type tools it has pretty sophisticated modulation so you can reproduce a lot of the tricks the old 8-bit music composers did to make the most out of the limited number of voices/sounds.

The Tweakbench plugins are all 32-bit-Windows-only, but they're free/cheap, and at least three of them either have samples from, or emulations of, the NES. Link: http://www.tweakbench.com/tapeworm

+1 to plogue Chipsounds for Atari and NES. It emulates the soundchips of several other vintage game systems as well, such as the Colecovision, Commodore 64, VIC 20 and more. For genesis/megadrive emulations, I'm gonna have to echo bftucker - you really can't go wrong with FMDrive.
Believe it or not, Massive does a really good job on old chip sounds, too. Only problem is you have to put in a bit of extra work to get something more authentic, and it doesn't do genesis/megadrive sounds well at all

Plogue chip sounds is worth the price if you're after those sounds. Xenos might be too modest to plug his own wares, but he has a couple of excellent chip style sound banks for massive at the Xenos soundworks website. Audiothing's minibit is in the same vein, but Plogue had gone to lengths of emulating all the old chips so it really is everything you could ask for.

This "circuit bent" NES VST, could be of interest.
Got a gorgeuous GUI at least

Got round to installing the P/Nes now.
Boy, is it CPU hungry. Even idle I get a 40% CPU hit in FL Studio, using the mono version

As good as that GUI looks, it is not especially useful for NES sounds. The precise nuances that give NES music it's distinct sounds are not often emulated in VST software because of how the VSTs themselves are configured. Chipsounds does allow for the type of nuance, but it is unfortunately much more complicated and painful to use than other non VST methods. Because of that, it is extremely disheartening to use. I believe the creators of Chipsounds have acknowledged how unnecessarily difficult it is with their VST, but can not make the changes without drastic overhauls that are not likely to happen.
I have not yet found a VST that allows for the type of control and nuance you need to make authentic and complicated NES music like you can with a tracker program such as Modplug (with samples) or FamiTracker, which emulates the NES sound engine. Matt Montag has a free VST that is close though. Can't remember what it is called though.
For Genesis music, you need look no further than FMDrive. This is VST that actually takes the care to acknowledge the things that make the Genesis music distinct. There is no NES equivalent in terms of understanding these nuances and distinctions. For that, AlyJames should be wildly commended. Maybe one day he'll make the NES VST of my dreams.

A heaping dose of outrageously goofy synth tracks, scores and chiptunes.

chipsounds 2.0 is a complete rewrite. Each sub chip core is very close to being bit accurate. Started working on that when 1.0 came out.Norrin_Radd wrote:I believe the creators of Chipsounds have acknowledged how unnecessarily difficult it is with their VST, but can not make the changes without drastic overhauls that are not likely to happen.
