Love Satin, but how is the delay mode working out for you?

Love Satin, having owned tape machines and a tape echo, it has given me alot of the same thing when I'm in the box.

The sound is awesome, but I have problem using the delay mode in a satisfactory way. I think the presets of the re-201 (a machine I've owned) sounds very strange for example. What should the starting point be to get started on the delay?

I set up an aux, set wetness to 100% as usual, and route some tracks of my choice to it. I've tried to start with just one reproduction head and used with and without sync, then add more to introduce some rhythm. I send some of the delay to a reverb. But I'm not getting the results I was hoping for. I prefer using Tal-DUB-II for must tasks, but maybe it's just because I know how to rock it? So please give some input on how the delay mode is working for you.

Do you guys get this to work in a satisfactory way? Perhaps I'm trying to make Satin do things it is not supposed to. Perhaps I miss the spring reverb on the re-201? I've tried to use impulse responses I created from my old re-201: (get it here if you're interested: http://andreasostling.se/impulse-response.html), but it don't really play well with Satin.

I am demoing Satin now and I find the delay presets lacking, seems most of them are subtle and the Space echo ones are not as dubby as one might expect. I use Dubmachines (an ableton packs) which brings an emulation of the 201 and I can't seem to dial similar delays from Satin.

So also very interested in some tips to get more delay goodness from satin.

Part of the RE-201 is missing, as the original hardware also has a spring reverb built in, which is also part of the dub sound. So add a spring reverb simulation after Satin if you want to get closer to this kind of sound.

Also, for the OP, I think that Urs stated that Satin is not supposed to emulate anything. At most it is close to tape recorders, and it is likley that they never really thought of emulating the RE-201. Another parameter you may want to modify if it is not already done is tape speed. Check if this parameter is close to the typical tape speed of the RE-201 (I know it varies, but is it close to 3.75 ips or to 30 ips?). That may help bring some grittiness.

Tried all kinds of tweaks. Still don't get that nice delay I was looking for.

But yea maybe the delay mode should be seen as a little decoration on top of the great tape emulaion it seems developed for.

Yeah, sorry, the main focus of Satin was recreating all aspects of high-end tape recording. We added various ways to get into lo-fi-ish territory, but we haven't specifically looked into the specs of the Space Echo or any other classic tape effect units. We've mostly studied the specs of Studers and stuff.

Which doesn't mean we won't ever. We'll see...

Automating the tape speed bring out a lot of vintage vibe and space echo and tube echo like delays.

Would it be possible to add an LFO for the Tape speed?

Also I have seen some videos on how manipulating the tape heads in real time in units like the tube echo and the roland 501 nmakes for very dramatic effects. Satin heads doesnt seem to respond to this kind of manipulation in the same way.

Maybe asking for so much tape dley functions from satin is a little bit over the top? we should wait for a deidcated tape delay emulation some time in the future?
