I also like this idea- however, unless someone is sitting on access to unlimited bandwidth, this will be very expensive. My webspace gives me 1 GB of bandwidth per month, and if say, 100 people per day download tunes you are looking at (assuming the average mp3 is 3.5 mb) 10.5 GB of bandwidth per month easy. KVR would need a 2nd or 3rd, or possibly even 4th server to handle peak hours.
That aside, it is realtively easy to have your web server do the counting for you- Apache is free and spits out all the stats you would ever need.

Jeez.. Listen folks! The man is right! You don't need the files to be on the same serverbastien wrote:
What if all links to songs from a KvR page had to go through a redirector? Something like:
http://www.kvr-vst.com/chart.php?song=h ... by=bastien
Then each click could be tracked!
I'm guessing it should only count clicks for logged-in users though, and ignore any where you clicked on your own song (hence the songowner link!)
ought to work!
On the other hand I don't like this kind of competitive behaviour maan... It will upset the delicate ecology of KVR dudes.

I think the one thing about the Cafe making it so darn okay is the lack of charts and categories. I feel its more about learning and improving rather then competing.
Plenty of sites out there allready support download charts.

don't like the chart idea...
the fun of competing is already covered by the monthly contest (which can be seen as a monthly chart... with relevant rules).
however, i'd like to see a rating system that will hopefully increase the number of feedbacks.
often, if you don't like a song, you don't comment. sometimes, you like a song but you don't have time to write a good review. but who couldn't rate a song?

i'm not for the chart idea either. too many different types of music and too many biases if ALL songs were lumped together and ranked.
i just have the feeling that some songs would be ranked low because the old phrase "not my cup of tea" would be used. if everyone could rate a song based on production, emotion, uniqueness, etc. etc. instead of what they liked genre-wise, then i would love the idea. but it simply ain't gonna happen.
i still just think the cafe needs some type of organization........but i've no idea how...
