I can't express how much I love Zebra and Dark Zebra is amazing, I am working
on a preset bank for zebra plus I get Zebra 3 for free because I have Dark Zebra
plus Zebra so looks like I'm a happy customer here in Canada.

Hi, not sure this is the right place to make feature suggestions for Zebra3, but here I go: I have looked into Oddity2 recently and saw they have added the XLFO and XADSR features, which are basically LFO and ADSR that can be applied individually to almost any parameter of the synth. This opens a great amount of modulation possibilities. Would this be great to find that type of feature into Zebra3?

Not sure - we'll think about it. Personally, I find adding individual LFOs and envelopes to each and every modulation target "overkill" - sharing modulation sources often results in a more organic, natural sound... and is certainly more manageable!oli67 wrote:Hi, not sure this is the right place to make feature suggestions for Zebra3, but here I go: I have looked into Oddity2 recently and saw they have added the XLFO and XADSR features, which are basically LFO and ADSR that can be applied individually to almost any parameter of the synth. I agree with this. I think the concept is kind of cool with simple synths like Oddity or Minimonsta but actually you end up with a lot of unused modulators. I think it's far better with a modular synth like Zebra to just do what it does and have a bunch of Envelopes and lfo's and assign them as needed.Howard wrote:Not sure - we'll think about it. I'm crappy programmer, but imho you don't need to have instances of unused modulators present. You can create them just in case of use. Difference is in philosophy. When each knob has it's own modulators, sharing them is cumbersome, so I also agree with Howard.
...on the other side, I like what Alchemy had. You could create new and new instances, I believe there was no limit in count of LFO/ADSRs you could create. I think that could be cool for Zebra. ...but it probably takes a lot of integrity work unter the hood, so absence of this is understandable.

I would be happy with endless LFO's. Most synths have way to less for me. (I only find a little iPad synth which can do this).
Another question... after all the time is this still sure that i get Zebra 3 for free (if it ever comes
when i buy Zebra 2 and the Dark Zebra?

That's Zebra? nice skin that's how I imagine Zebra 3 will look.goleat wrote:I would like a skin like this:

zebra is already not a VA... u-he makes other synths for that.
I don't know if granular is where I would take it but the more expansion to the wavetable functionality the better imo (and those osc fx! they're the best part!)

So if anyone remembers, i caused a minor stir in this thread a couple of months back offering some rather superficial criticisms of Zebra2. In my defence, i was clearly and knowingly referring to first impressions, and in that regard i stand by what i said, especially considering the chances of new user jumping on from Hive.
I still find the GUI horrible and dated, I'm happily using Redux (UDH) instead though so problem solved.
I still consider Howard's factory presets a little dated sounding. Closer inspection leads me to think this is in many cases due to reverbs and delays being mixed in low. While this probably helps to make the sounds ready to fit in the mix better, they do lose the wow factor that the like of Spire or Hive presets clearly have. It's this that i think makes them sound "dated" for want of a better word. Nevertheless, he's made some great comprehensive sounds there which will fit many uses and with a bit more processing could easily be brought in line with an equivalent Spire patch (more on this later).
That said, I think perhaps having an entire factory bank designed by one person is probably not the best idea. No matter how good a designer is, much of his work will to some extent be characteristic of his sound. I could say the same for many others. So here perhaps, Zebra suffers in that it really only shows what one man can do with it. The flavours, styles and characteristics of a few other designers would surely help to show a greater depth to the synth upon that all important first listen.
Anyway, I've not come here to revive an old debate. At the time, i considered myself unqualified to discuss sound quality, complexity and depth. Now though, I do. First sound quality, after playing around with Spire for a short time, loading up zebra and playing a few things, the (subjective) difference in quality is outstanding, with Zebra sounding cleaner, purer and generally more pleasant. Spire still has its immediacy in usabiliity but that seems to me the only significant reason why i'd choose Spire over Zebra within a project.
As for complexity, seriously amazing, I'm finding so many things that i would never expect (specifically in the oscfx), and while its no Bazille it does indeed feel and act in a very full-modular way. I think its fair to say i could live with this one synth and never run out of ideas.
So what's the point of all this, well those first impressions could be enough to deter potential buyers, especially those from an EDM persuasion. I recall urs said a new skin was planned before v3, 2.8 perhaps? This would be a great thing, might i suggest that you look seriously at redux as a template for the ideal layout, it improves on the original in so many ways. This one: http://plugmon.org/zebra-pokemod/ looks nice, especially the modules, but is still rather small and (for me) the demo seems buggy.
Main request for v3 though is presets for each module. This would open a world of time-limited sound design potential and make it a lot easier to copy one module (reverb say) onto another instance in a track.
A few have suggested granular, I'm not so sure here (although it would be nice), i think its good to focus on the entirely rendered nature of Zebra sound generation.
Better detune, like Hive's various types would be an obvious addition.
Aside from that just keep the minor revisions coming, I'm in no hurry for v3, but will be keen to see the planned skin update.
tl:dr. I said before it seemed a bit dated on first impressions and singled out the GUI and presets, having dug much deeper i can now fully appreciate the synth's quality and potential, far more than one would initially expect from such an old looking synth with a patchbank made entirely by one man. I followed that up with a few suggestions for v3.
