Is there an OMNI MIDI channel mode?

I have MIDI device that outputs on multiple MIDI channels simultaneously. When I record all the MIDI data gets merged into a single clip with a single channel. How can I keep the data on separate channels? If no way exist, then I would like to request OMNI mode as a new feature.

Have you tried the virtual midi inputs? You can create them in the midi settings page.

I appreciate your input, but the MIDI device I want recorded is a MIDI mixer with 16 channel output. Even if I did use the virtual inputs I would have to have 16 extra tracks for saving the data. That seems like a really messy situation. Maybe it wouldn't be that big a deal with the new tagging. Not sure.

In the properties panel you can enable 16 channels for the midi clip.

But the recording process seems to still create a single channel clip. Not sure how that does anything...

You could set up a template with the 16 separate MIDI real & virtual inputs so you wouldn't have to set it up every time. This would separate the MIDI data by channel onto different tracks. If you know which channels you're sending data on, you could use fewer than 16.
If that's not what you want to happen, we haven't understood your question.

That is actually what I did jabe. However, I would simply prefer to use one device and record into one track.

What would happen with playback then? Would you direct each channel to another track to play through different plug-in instruments? Editing could be complicated if you have several different MIDI inputs on the one track.Rock wrote:That is actually what I did jabe. I used to have a software MIDI sequencer (Prism, if anyone is interested) that allowed extraction from one track to another on any combination of data at all - channel, note range, velocity, etc.

I think, by default, Tracktion effectively IS OMNI within tracks, and that's where you hit the issue. Default is that all notes within a track don't have MIDI channel information, only notes, velocities, bends, and all that stuff that affects one channel. That's why your external "MULTI" mode external information all gets merged into a single jumble, unless you split it out during input.

The incoming data is from an automated mixer. When I send the same data back out after recording, it simply moves the mixer's faders. It actually works, I just have to have 16 tracks to do it. After playing with it a bit, I was pretty please with how helpful the track tagging made it to hide those 16 tracks.jabe wrote:What would happen with playback then? Ah, now I understand. Well, glad you've got a work round sorted. I'm a little surprised that the channels don't seem to be retained.

Is there an option that the faders can be tied to individual notes, rather than midi channels? Or are there a whole lot of parameters that are controlled in addition to just the motorized faders, so they "need" a full channel with multiple parameters within each mixer channel?

I think there are too many with 64 channels, 24 buses, and 12 aux sends, masters, mutes, and panning. Thank goodness for the track tagging.

My request for Multichannel clips still stands. The work-around is messy. Don't some VST accept multiple channels anyway?

Rock, do you use the same MIDI data that you are recording to control Tracktion?
I couldn't find a way to do that when I tried to set up a Novation Launchpad as a control surface (using Tracktion MIDI learn instead the Novation Automap Universal control surface option). Note or CC data from any learned MIDI control was swallowed by Tracktion and unavailable/missing from the MIDI input in my Edit.
I wanted the learned controls to be available as input to Tracktion so that I could play them back to the controller, so that I could get visual feedback of the current state.
