One thing I really like about Fostex is that they publish response curves for their monitors:

Shame all of the makers don't.

so do the Events.. atleast of the TR5 and 8. Am trying to get one for the Tr6.

what is the diff between passive and active ?

Passive speakers need an amplifier (external) ro power them.

Active speakers come with a built in amp. So u just plug in the signal cable and ure on...

In my opinion, if you're not willing to spend more than $300, you're better off buying a good pair of headphones.

It was mentione don the 2003 catalog for the Event TR series monitors.

If you cant get a hold of it i can try and perhaps get it scanned and mailed.

Well, I´ve got the "old" M-audio ones (SP-5B) and they are exxxelent!
a bit on the colouring side, but all my mixes sound great without having to compensate for anything.
I even master my stuff on them.
Usually, if I put some effort into it, my mixes can be played on all Hifi systems without sounding "strange"
Don´t dissmis them if you can find them (woohoo, they are now rare classics)

Nearly right: Passive monitors do need an external amp, and the signal is split to the different drivers with a passive crossover.

"Powered" monitors have a built in amp, but otherwise use the same design (one amp feeding a passive crossover)

True active monitors split the signal into the desired frequency bands at line level using an active crossover, and then feed these signals to seperate power amps (like a PA system)

nonsense - I paid 200euros for my M1 MKII passive and they are even cheaper now

ah o.k. - my bad

- that's another thing I suppose - I took the passives because decent actives would have been to expensive for me (e.g. M1 mkII 375euros at that time) so I suppose you're somewhat right - but mixing&mastering on headphones is still a 'no way'-thing

You don´t need to pay large amounts of cash for a couple of nice active nearfileds!
