Same thoughts here, I'd wish to have a parameter lane for modwheel in Live also - I know that this is done via the clip envelopes, but it would be much clearer if one could draw in the modwheel modifications in the arrangement. Is this an Ableton Live problem only?

Post

It's not a Live problem. Modwheels aren't supposed to be host automated - they're a MIDI CC message, they belong in the MIDI editor.

I'm not that savvy about MIDI, still I don't get it why it would be so difficult to implement- you can control the cutoff or any other synth paramter, but not the modwheel?! But that's totally off topic of course...

I understand that there's a difference, but I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around why there is a difference..
It's similar to asking why there aren't automation lanes for note data. Pitch Bend and Modwheel transmit MIDI information and the traditional model is to either record a performance or edit the appropriate DAW MIDI lane. There are several MIDI input signals that aren't automatable directly with track envelopes: Breath, Expression, Channel Pressure, and lots more.

Personally I always liked the Camel Audio Alchemy method of assigning modwheel to one of the 8 macro knobs.
Feel free to call me Brian.

I tried doing something similar to this last night, by mapping the "Constant" source to the ModWheel, thus being able to modulate the modulated knob. But I couldn't get it to work.

This isn't that big of a deal, especially since I have a way to modulate it, but it's more to satisfy my curiousity.. Sorry to hijack the thread a bit.

If you're on Windows and use a DAW that supports MIDI VST plugins you can download the free ReaPlugs collection:
http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/

Put ReaControlMIDI before the synth plugin of your choice and then automate the sliders for Pitch Bend, Modwheel, or any other MIDI CC you want. It's my preferred way in Reaper of converting automation lane data into MIDI.

If you're on Mac you can use Reaper for OSX to do the same thing (ReaControlMIDI is built in) but I don't know of a comperable VST/AU on OS X.

You can Record the modwheel.
Just press record automation recording in Bitwig and then use the modwheel To record it into an automation lane.
You can also draw an automation lane by using the pen.

Also if your using live suite you could use any of the many m4l devices out there that have midi/pitch on them and automate those. Really though just draw in cc1 automation, its the simplest and most straightforward way to do it and makes the most sense

Sweet, thanks for all the responses. Now back to the topic at hand - how cool Hive is and what goodies are being found in the full Factory Presets.

Not possible in Live's arrangement view. I'll take a look at those Max4Live devices. :tu:

Also if you cant find them, try looking in the push sections of the m4l websites. A lot of those devices were created for use with push before they added modwheel support so that you could map the knob the device to push and then at least have a knob for mod. So while it was intended for push it would work for this as well

I don't know what you mean (or are trying to achieve) there, fourthmanfire, but using Constant for anything other than a static offset makes no sense and won't work. Because it's a constant :-)

I'm not sure what the problem is really, I'm able to record modwheel data and edit it (or draw it in) in Live 9 without needing complicated addons. Unlike host automation you don't even need to arm the automation record button.

Post

From what Ive gathered their issue is that you cannot draw in cc1 data on the arrangement timeline, since its a per-clip attribute and they want to be able to automate it over the arrangement.

Usually most people would just see what the modwheel was attached to and just automate that instead

OK I'm possibly still missing something - I can record and edit cc1 envelopes in arrange mode too, just open up the envelope editor and select cc1.
