I'm about to download the VST SDK's, but which version should I get to ensure compatibility with Tracktion? 2.0 or 2.3?

Thanks,
G.

LOL, no problem, it's no big secret.

I have a Roland JD800 and JD990 and neither respond to CC automation, only sysex commands. So the plugin will take CC data in one end and spit sysex data out the other. I'll probably make it generic so that you can assign custom sysex strings to the controllers of your choice, that way it will work for all sysex-based synths and not just my beloved JD's :)

aaah
if youre on pc this would take you about half an hour to make in synthedit :)
if your good at proggramming though no probs

Can Synthedit do math? The catch with Roland synths is that all sysex strings are verified by a checksum which is calculated from the bytes being sent. If it can, then maybe I'll go that way. I want to learn both VST and Synthedit, I just need to move to a planet with longer days

yeah synthedit can do math
also there are add on modules to do math aswell
also dehaupt has a sysex module for synthedit :)

I've downloaded that sysex module and installed it into the synthedit/modules/midi folder but it doesn't show up even if I restart synthedit.

Do these custom modules only show up for registered users?

I'm now thinking that synthedit is a better way to go (less work!) and if necessary I can write my own add-on module to do the specific calculations I need.

Thanks,
G.

i just downloaded and checked and its fine

i think what you may have done is put the sem in the midi folder instead of the modules midi folder

if you put it in the right folder then you must be running the wrong version of synthedit

older versions wont run the newer add on modules
jeff is constantly updating the sdk
no one and i mean no one gives user support like jeff
but this also means things move along at an awesome pace

maybe aswell your not running the beta?
most add ons only run in the latest beta

let me know your version number
also if you do use synthedit a bit consider registering
jeff doesnt charge much about 11 GBP thats fuckall for the power hes handing out :)
anyway keep me posted
oh and if you need somewhere to host the plug once its done or need any GUI work on the plug just let me know

Got it - I had downloaded the "stable" version, not the most recent beta.

Now I've looked around I'm pretty certain I'll have to write my own module to do what I want, but that's fine, it's a lot less work than writing a VST from scratch appears to be.

And yes, if I need some help along the way with the GUI, you can be sure I'll holler!

Thanks for all the help, it's hugely appreciated :)

small update
daves sysex tool will do exactly what you want on the next update
hes just been very busy recently getting his gui modules working

the next version of his mod will read sysex from your synth and allow you to save it and reload it

this should also mean that if you oad the plug into a particular song and read in the sysex it will be saved as part of the plugs settings in tracktion :)

i think this was what you were trying to acheive yes?

its pointless making a similar module
cuz dave will put stuff into his for you
just send him a small donation hes a great bloke
this would leave you free to write some more exciting mods
if you need any ideas just let me know
dave wrights the custom stuff for our synths but were always looking for an extra set of hands (ears)

Not quite - his plugin works with fixed sysex data strings, whereas what I have in mind will actually generate sysex data dynamically.

The sysex for the JD series works by modifying specific memory locations - literally writing to patch memory data. So if I want to do a filter sweep, for example, I have to send successive sysex strings writing an in/decreasing value to a specific memory location.

Therefore, what I need is a plugin that accepts CC data (eg, Tracktion's envelopes, or an external controller) and translates those into specific sysex messages that modify particular parts of the JDs memory.

Even if it turns out to be a duplication of effort, it's a good place for me to get my feet wet anyway :)

Thanks,
G.

oh sorry misunderstood

but i tell you what if you get it going let me know because
im working on a plug to control
http://www.ucapps.de
midi sid synth and we got stumped with this exact same thing
i havent asked dave to write a plug to sort it yet cuz thor the creator of ucapps has gone away for a few months and id forgotten all about it :)
but you reminded me so let me know how you get on
oh and jeff will always answer questions you have about the sdk aswell
