For those who bought it at launch, after a couple of weeks of using it, how do you feel about it now?

I got ReNoise so I can download them.Mivo wrote:There are three more packs in the Backstage area, but those are for registered users only
I really cool thing with the Elements pack, is that I can extract the Xrnl file, and then it gives me a folder with 259 sfz patches that looks like can be used in any sampler able to load sfz files

Nothing to write home about. If you're alright doing filters or delays without much "character" they'll do fine. Plus you can set up an absurd number of different FX groups for different samples.aMUSEd wrote:Are the fx any good?

The effects in renoise are indeed not tha mind blowing , but now with redux and forthcoming renoise there are
a lot of improvevements .
-The instruments ZDF filters are Nice ( the previous ones were utter crap ) , new dsp filter ZDF ( analog emu ) and digital ...chebyshev....nice w, with adustable ripple
-The mutlitap delay is also verry nice with a pleasant saturation overdrive effect...but still not able to do tape style echo effects ( delay smoothing .
-Convolver reverb , naaah the decay stage of high frequency content...sounds way different then most convolution reverbs , but it's usable
-Cabinet simulator is also a nice sounding effect , same goes for chorus ( it ain' no vallhala ubermod ) ,
Almost all modulation effects have the new filters included and these sound good !
-The weakest of all the effects is the distortion , a simple hyperbolic curve ...( I prefer tanh ) , the same old
waveshaper with a triangular transfer function ...you can now oversample 8times , but the algoritms are still suckie suck .
I am begging them for a chebby waveshaper .....
-Scream filter is a huge joke , really I recreated it in reaktor, it's just a rectifed filter
All in all ...the next renoise version is something I look forward to ( everyhing in redux will be included in next renoise version ) , and hopefully they improve some sections/ parts mentioned above ...

Woooot, the Renoise distortion owns! !! So simple and yet so spectacular sounding. Well, I guess we all got different taste:-)gentleclockdivider wrote:Long ime renoise user here since 2007.TFF wrote:Nothing to write home about. I am just saying that the distortion is a verry basic hyperbolic curve ...it's been used since the earliest vst's and is in my opinion way too simple .
Some more mojo is most welcome
The waveshaper is just a triangle transfer function , but usable
I do love th overdrive in the new filters , and the multitapdelay ( when you set delay to zero sync and no feedback ..mute dry signal ) , you can use it as an overdrive effect .

Nice to get a rebate on Redux as I am a Renoise owner, but it is annoying that VAT gets added
I'm not based in the EU, I shouldn't have to pay VAT ?

I have shitloads of own stuff written as XM (and some as IT). Can Redux load that (I'd love to sorta remix it for the 2010s or something). Can I use Renoise to somehow transfer my XM stuff into Redux?
Obviously a computer still can’t throw a television out of a hotel window or get drunk and be sick on the carpet, so there is little danger of them replacing drummers for some while yet. -- Nick Mason

Just tried loading .xi's in Redux, fastracker instruments, and this works without a hitch! Xm's are fasttracker songs, right? You should use Renoise for remixing these, redux won't open them.peejunk wrote:I have shitloads of own stuff written as XM (and some as IT). Maybe you can persuade an able scripter to write a tool which converts opened xm's in renoise to phrases which you can then open in Redux, but that's quite the effort when you can just load the xm in Renoise.

Lots of Renoise users dig the effects, it looks like the sole idea of included stuff that can be fiddled with electrifies people, but it's more geeky atitude than anything practical in my opinion. Nobody expects software that cheap to come packed full of effects and synths and developers should concentrate on adding new features and improving the workflow so they can capitalize more on their unique take on music composition instead of making plugins that don't stand a chance against free alternatives from companies like TDR etc.
Can't wait for new Renoise, even if it's half as impressive feature-wise as they usually are, it's going to be a blast

Redux is fantastic. Been using Renoise alongside Reaper for a few years now, basically what Redux does is take the ReWire headache out of making them interact. IMO, it's the best VST sampler out there (yup I said it) as long as you don't need the relatively extreme/deep features of something like Kontakt. Although with scripting, etc., Renoise/Redux could technically have a lot of those features too.
The Phrase function (present in both in somewhat different forms) has been a creative revelation for me, though I'm told it's rather similar to a function in Ableton, so I guess it's not unique. Love it dearly anyway, never giving it up. (And nope I don't work for them in any capacity, just a customer).
I'll add that, yeah, some of the FX leave something to be desired, but it's almost never been a hindrance. There's a "Renoise sound" that I've come to like a lot.
And yeah it loads the old .xi instruments. Actually Awave Studio (another good application) can convert a sample collection to .xi, and since Awave can also read most of the old hardware sampler formats (Roland S-550, TX16W, etc.), old rave DJs like me can convert our old sampler creations into a format Renoise/Redux can use. It's awesome, kids. I have all my old S-550 instruments in Redux. Awesome. (If you're an aging nostalgiac like me anyway!)
