TBH I've never got past just looking at it! Principally because I know I'm going to have to look it up in the online manual, which kinda puts me off. I just find the manual a bit of a struggle sometimes.

Thanks for the tip. You mean "guitar => filters => amp distortion"? Are you having lowpass filters in mind?mutools wrote:Try combining it with some parallel filters in front of it.

Broader question: Are you familiar with synth basics? Eg: Do you know what phase modulation is?

Rather EQ / bandpass filters, but can be any combi. Bottomline is to color the distortion effect. Though i must add i'm not yet very experienced with building guitar effect chains.Reincke wrote:Thanks for the tip. You mean "guitar => filters => amp distortion"? I understand analogue synthesis, but phase modulation isn't something I've come acrossmutools wrote: Why?

BTW, I'd hardly call pm basic synthesis.
Regarding online manual, I think it's because it's not laid out too well, mostly.

Something to check... I just noticed that recording in a track with a vst was recording 2 notes in the same position... So I went to edit the clip and after selecting the note and moving it there was another note under it? Happened multiple times. OSX 10.9.5. Latest MuLab 6.5.15. And I tried it with 6.1.4. Also... FYI. I do have a new keyboard a CME, but it's not having any issues with Studio One 3 or 2 so not sure what the problem could be...

Exactly. PM is not what you learn about in "Synthesis 101" classes, I betsl23 wrote:BTW, I'd hardly call pm basic synthesis.
Hmm... these three are the best hits from Google... (the first is referenced by at least one other in the results)

Subtractive (in the last one only?!), FM, Additive, Granular, Wavetable and Physical Modelling but no phase mod synthesis

Phase modulation is exactly what Yamaha-style "FM" synthesis is, used on all those DX synths.

Wikipedia Frequency Modulation Synthesis sends me to Phase modulation which sends me to Phase-shift keying, at which point I get confused as it's mostly maths.EvilDragon wrote:Phase modulation is exactly what Yamaha-style "FM" synthesis is, used on all those DX synths.

That's what it is, maths.

Try this. Its a step-by-step explanation of FM and PM.
It starts very basic, ie "As we know - a note has a pitch" and builds from there.

Yes, you can create storms with that thing!Taron wrote:wow, the Basic Synth
Hmmm, because it is the first synth that new users encounter, perhaps we can do a few presets for it?

AH, haha...hmmm...OMC maybe? (OneMuxCompetition)
Or rather BSC for that matter...hmmm...that could be good fun for sure!!!
But, yeah, no worries, I'd totally enjoy making some presets, but the silly part here is that there is no such thing like a preset for a mux, you know, eh...it's gonna be a "New mux". Sometimes I do wonder, if there could be a justifiable and reasonable way of having a kind of preset format for already "baked" muxes, so to say. It always feels a little odd to switch out the whole synth, rather than changing 4 parameters.
But it would be a major can of worms, I'm very clear about that.
