Step sequencers aren't just for note entry remember, they are live compositional tools to jam with.
No point in comparing to the piano roll.

What's the difference between a step sequencer and piano roll sequences in the session view?

Nothing if its just a basic vanilla sequencer.
However it would have the advantage off each step being midi controllable.
I use the ARP and Step mod devices this way but a purpose made sequencer would be nice.
Throw in LFO devices to modulate speed, number of steps etc for craziness :)

Thanks. Maybe there are some enhancements to the piano roll that could be added to make it more of an uber step sequencer for people who like that?

I was thinking probability for each note would be cool.

That can be done if you modulate the note pitch shifter device with an LFO or the step modulator. You can modulate each step of the step modulator with LFO s or another step modulator

Its just a bit cumbersome as the various devices you want to modulate need to be nested in the modulators, which makes it difficult if you get some crazy modulation idea and have to break the contraption apart.

Hopefully the modular view will remedy this

Or maybe a note filter in a step mod modulated by an lfo.

a step sequencer device allowes you to trigger the whole sequence with just one note.

But the session view allows you to trigger a sequence with one action, so what's so different? And with 1.2 you will be able to freely assign the triggering of clips to midi notes and keyboard keys.

Then that's another implementation, this is how I use the bitwig ARP as a step sequencer.

I think weve strayed into semantics now.

Google step sequencer and look at some hardware implementations, this is where the idea comes from after all

this is what i'm waiting for. but still, from experience a stepsequencer "plugin" delivers different results, due to many reasons... it' s a different thing that can lead to quite different results compared to the traditional pianoroll. at least this is my experience since 30 years of electronic music making... and why not having it? you don't, if you don't like, have to use it. but it' s good if it' s there for the ones who might use it. it only serves good if it' s there - not bad.
