If not Harmor, maybe Morphine could be seen as a continuation of Octopus?

I had this preconception that most Linplug stuff was priced in the €/$150, which is over my head.loachm wrote:...and about your question why octupus doesn't get more attention - because it was probably a one time thing between linplug and maxx cluster. a better question would be why linplug's products don't get more attention. spektral is one of the most interesting synths that came out in the last couple of years...
But I see now that prices have been cut on older plugs, and if there is a new 33% off sale and I can get Alpha3 for just about €40 that would be a nice deal

I used to have octopus and i loved the sound and mostly liked the interface.loachm wrote:

Unfortunaly the way the voice management was designed (according to linplug, i thought it was just buggy) made it unusable for long release chords for me so i sold it.
I decided not to do business with linplug ever again but tbh if octopus were to get some serious love from them would reconsider it.
The rest of their lineup seems just boring to me. Fine as far as features and quality go but not exciting.
Like i would still like an awesome sounding multisample synth with good mapping features and kickass filters. I know they have CRX4 with its bells and whistles at a low price but... its not quite it.
Then there is Spectral wich probably can make any sound i can imagine. So in that respect its the same as many other synths these days.
I saw a preset for MorphoX (i don't even get what that one is about) has a name that fits how their stuff seems to me: overtechnical ja

...I can only guess, but considering how many synths maxx cluster has released through image-line (including serveral version of Toxic, if I'm not mistaken), it seems to me that Octopus could be a product that's only maintained but wouldn't get fixed or developed further. But it's just a guess!uselessmind wrote:I used to have octopus and i loved the sound and mostly liked the interface.loachm wrote:

I don't think Linplug's portfolio is boring - in fact, Alpha/MorphoX, Cr4 and Spektral could make a solid synth bundle that could make you happy for a long time (they should consider bundles). Linplug have been around for a long time and I regard them as one of the most renowned and trustworthy developers). I have demoed their products serveral times and would have seriously considered them, if I hadn't already some synths that do similar jobs. Only exception is Spektral which I've been demoing for quite a while. It is really, really interesting - such an easy architecture (reminds me of Albino which I owned for a long time) that can produce a wide range of sounds. And kudos to Mr. Linsener for allowing to save presets in demo mode!! This gives me really an opportunity to verify what I'm doing over a longer period of time (which is sometimes necessary. There are some things that annoy me a bit, i.e. if there is a display of the filter curve it would be helpful to show the frequency range and movement of the cut-off. To me it's a bit of a wasted opportunity/space atm. And the effect parameters don't seem to use fixed IDs - so, every parameter in every fx slot has it's own ID. Makes it impossible to create a controller map (I think, but I haven't explored this enough) - it would be better if all the knobs in one particular fx slot had a fixed ID no matter what effect has been selected.
I'd say give Spektral another try - it's very easy to use, can produce some amazing sounds and the crossmodulation possibilities are really wonderful! If I'd find my way around the thing that annoy me and/or if it would have a wavetable feature and morphable filters, I'd be sold...

They'll most likely never be an Octopus 2, but who cares? It's stable and a solid FM synth. It's still one of my favorite synths after all these years. There's a really nice character to it... almost a "warmth" that many other FM synths do not have.

Deposit €79 in my paypal account, and I will give you my answerloachm wrote:...so is it about the price or the quality of the synth?

...that would be one option. Another one might be - I estimate 79€ would be about the cost for 3-4 months of internet access. Why don't you save up the money to buy the synth - wouldn't hurt your post count and could possibly help to lower some bs level on kvr...

Maxx developed Octopus (as we know). He works at IL currently and has for a long time. There will be no Octopus 2 unless Peter decides to take one up (likely requiring an entire rewrite). With that in mind it's stable and Peter will upkeep any relevant stability issues that may arise.
So, indeed it's unfortunate that it probably won't happen, but all is well in its world.

Octopus ? Hmm very nice synth, highly underrated and to be honest I don't know why.
I really like it.

There is already a deal on Octopus in the sales forum now, at below $50. But as I got Morphine and Rhino, it looks to me that they cover much of the same ground.
And Octopus 1 was released about 10 years ago, if I bought it would be good to know that a v2 would be released.
