Took me a while to track this one down. Looks like MStereoSpread only works in 2.0 configuration. Sure, because it's processing a two channel file to be wider, but the problem is when trying to use it in a surround context in things like MXXX. Example, i was setting up a surround processing system in MXXX, to split the front and rear channels into two sets of stereo, and then adding stereo spread to the two sets. Unfortunately Stereo Spread only works on the front channels, because it only accepts a 2.0 signal. The rear set isn't affected by stereo spread because it's in channels 5 and 6 (because 3 and 4 are Center and LFE), even though it really only contains 2 channels.

This isn't a massive problem, i guess i could use the channel matrix to reroute the signal from 5 and 6 to 1 and 2, then apply the stereo spread, then reroute back to 5 and 6. But it's a bit weird and it would be cooler for MStereoSpread and its MXXX module to be 'surround aware', so you could at least specify what to work on.

Also, it does open up the question of making a surround processor, there are very few available surround processors and they tend to be expensive, it could be a good thing for Melda to do (and not too difficult). Just sayin :)

Well, the thing is you want "aritificial stereo", which is kind of contradictory to the surround :). You can use MStereoGenerator to really "generate" artificial stereo content in each channel, no matter how many there are, but MStereoSpread works in quite a different way and I actually wouldn't recommend doing what you are trying to do. Instead use MStereoSpread on the incoming mono signal and then use a surround panner. Otherwise the output will probably make no sense.
