How to record automation data

When I just press record and move some knobs of a plugin, nothing is recorded. Do I have to open an automation subtrack? But sometimes I even don't know the name of the knob.

I just tried it and it works for me, how are you going about it ?

Indeed it works, but what happens, if you open a subtrack for automation? I cannot see or find the recorded data.

I just pressed record and Mulab created the automation lanes itself.
