10 out of 10 review for HIVE in latest Computer Music (issue 211, page 94-95), with Editor's and Performance Award :tu:

"u-he's elegant masterpiece is easily the best choice for anyone looking for a straightforward, fat-sounding and future-proof virtual analogue synth"

Wow. That's impressive.

10?

I'd give 9,5 at max. :clown:

Is Hive really perfect yet? Let's give Urs sth to improve, shall we? :)

I noticed strange behaviour with Hive

Playing BS Base Five in FL Studio 12.1 seems all good, but for some reason randomly every second note (playing a pattern in a song mode) stops playing and then starts playing again after few seconds.

This might be fixed with the upcoming maintenance update. It would be great if you could verify this with the beta we're going to post in a week or so.

Thank you for notifying about update :) will gonna test it out

Verified with Linux version of Hive in Bitwig 1.1.10. Replaced the Base Five with the HS Hoomer Bass, problem is gone. Hmm...

Best,

Hey Urs, congrats on all the wonderful reviews of Hive! I'm still loving it so I hate to be a pain, but what are the chances of getting a fix for this issue you reproduced, in the next update?
Urs wrote:I set up a sequence in Hive in AU Lab, all legato, playing just a sine oscillator in legato mode, filters on bypass. And indeed, the interval changes have perceivable pops and clicks.
It's still causing me grief so I've temporarily stopped using Hive for the more aggressive bass patches where I want boosted treble content.

On another note - I've been unable to use the sequencer / arp, as it doesn't tempo sync correctly for me (stutters and skips) in Bitwig. Let me know if I can provide more detail, otherwise I'm curious if any other Bitwig users here have had similar experiences.

Excited for the future of Hive, thx for all the hard work! :tu:

Sorry, I've sussed it out and there is no direct fix: It's a physical phenomenon :borg:

Any synth producing a sine wave will click when pitch jumps a large interval. But I don't think this is the issue here. The actual issue is this: In addition there'll be a spike in peak level when there's a highpass filter / DC-blocker afterwards. It's easily explained: The highpass filter maintains a more or less constant charge around DC-level (hopefully 0). A sudden change in frequency means that for a moment there is a DC component, e.g. when a long half-cycle of a low pitched sine below DC is followed by a high pitched sine that is equally as long but has a number full cycles with positive and negative parts. Thus suddenly the DC-blocker has a little spike that smoothly falls back to zero in a few samples. It's like a short envelope that's added to the signal. I've tried this with a bunch of synths from u-he and others, it's always the same. Sine + fast legato + HP = clicks and thumps.

Now, to avoid this in Hive you need to avoid highpass filters. So, no BPs or HPs in the actual filters. Furthermore, afaiaa the phaser and the compressor highpass filter the signal. With a phaser this is in it's nature when from time to time the bass content is cancelled out. The compressor uses a highpass filter to DC-block the signal (That's what happens when you use a high-end compressor... I would need to talk to Sascha to see if this can be made optional). Also, of course, you need to avoid drastic EQing. I'm not sure I have tested every single mode of all FX, but from what I can see this is it.

I'm not sure what this could be, but we'll publish a lot of fixes soon, much of which are related to the sequencer and arpeggiator. It would be great if you could check this out then and let me know whether or not it is fixed.
Excited for the future of Hive, thx for all the hard work! :tu:
Thank you! I'm also very much looking forward to getting the maintenance update out so I can go back to R&D and develop some nice new features - not just for Hive, but definitely some good stuff for it also.

Cheers,

- Urs

There are issues with Bitwig and host syncing, I had an issue with Filterscape which was reported to them and acknowledged as a bug.

Yup, we hope this week. Internal beta runs well, but they keep finding little niggles that require further attention.

Me again, I felt Zebra's release was abrupt, or the clicking sound at closing time as like me being politely asked to choose another pub when I've had their limit, but paying for the cab and pointing me in the direction Kept me coming back. ;) I absolutely love VST's that make you question. Like zebra's release "abnormalities" (I'm probably missing something) Caused me to take a closer look at reverb. Zebra'z approach and infinite abrupt possibilities meaning I thought the sound changed when I breathed heavy on the screen. Fact of the matter, Zebra gave us a a control of the "source" that I haven't found anywhere else. It's like being a guitarist, easiest to learn/hardest to master. Hives has that going on, Urs loves to make machines that are so sensitive you need.... Bigger knobs, ha there you go I'll shut up and go find that pub, it's my drink night.

I never got presets besides examples. The closest I got was using a very soft clear staccato sound that seemed to rule with very little help. Other wise i feel im writing for the preset instead of the "preset" being my bitch.
