If you play with the attack and decay envelope slopes, SM's snappiness changes dramatically. The attack slope is a bit counter-intuitive as you need to push it to the right to get a good, fast-rising attack. You also need to work with the envelope amount in the envelope controls themselves as well as the modulator settings on the righthand side as well as the filter cutoff itself.

Dune2 gives you slightly more control over decay length at its shortest extreme, which probably is making it sound "clicky". I've found you can move it to 20 per cent before it moves out of the click range when its controlling the filter's entire range.

Then there's u-he's Podolski. Switch to exponential ADSR, turn up click, turn up resonance, shield your ears.

Wow I'm glad I never wasted any money on a Virus or Nova...........
but can you really not hear/feel the difference between synth1 and the Virus? Is the difference something that isn't worth worrying about to you?
$1,200 worth of difference ? No.

How about posting simple examples here to show the snappiness of each synth? So we have something more to compare than words?

Lot of synths can be used to create snappy *sounds* (as in proemeinent and noticeable attacks, so maybe my snappy could differ from your snappy ). It's not always relevant to adress only EVs for this btw, there are a lot of ways to reach this goal. FM and WT synthesis will get you there almost effortless. For pure VAs, there are still some tricks, but accordingly, fast envelopes should be prefered. It's merely a matter of programming on most synths imho. Some synths however have no ways to do it. They probably/hopefully have some other merits.

Fair enough. It would be worth the $1200 to me if I had a sound that was reliant on big lead sounds with super snappy filtering going on. I'm the sort of person who doesn't settle for a compromise very easily.

All the Vaz synths has great analog sounding snappy envelopes.

Are you the kind of person who can put an actual definition to "Super Snappy" ?

U-he A.C.E has this option and can sound pretty snappy.

Bazille also has this option too!

Don't "Slows Down" and "Snappy" sound like oxymorons ?

No, you won't get a definition out of me - it will only be quote and ridiculed :hihi: I don't really like to define artistic things - it usually just gets bogged down in words usually used to describe materials, temperature and texture... 'it sounds kind of warm and woody with a rough plastic like overtone...' :help: But, the video does a pretty good job - the virus sounds much chunkier (there I go...), at that point where the filter dive bombs, than the other synths.

Snappy-ness exists. unless you never looked for it. :)

Post

Snappiness (for me): Lots of filter envelope amount, short decay, very short to no release, closed filter cutoff, lot of resonance=lots of boom and cream. :)

Btw, IMO a lot of chunkiness of the Virus in the video comes from the oscillators rather than the filter/envelope. IMO, to be really able to judge the snappiness, you need more envelope amount, shorter decay, more resonance. Surely the Virus is quite snappy, but i'm sure there is snappier stuff these days. Of course if my definition of snappiness is the common one. :)

So in other words you don't know what it is but you're willing to pay $1200 for it........Ok....... :tu:

Ah so "snappy envelopes" really means "exponential envelopes". :)
Good to know.
If only we could translate "warm" like that too...

Still you can make linear envelopes sound kinda exponential if you stack few instances and make the loudest instance decay fastest, then a bit quieter instance decay medium fast, etc...

Or just use a synth with exponential or adjustable shape envelopes. :)
