Mono summing

Sorry for the basic question, but I was surprised to not find the answer in the manual.

I have a VIP2.

Suppose I want to run in mono - does either of the jacks sum to mono (on most keyboard equipment its usually the left) if it's the only one in use?

Nope. My stage pianos have this function, so this would make sense, but software doesn't always make sense.

My workaround is this:
Destroyfx monomaker. Free plugin that if It's not already on your receptor, download from their website. You can do both mono sum and power pan. I do this at the church I play for - they don't have enough channels to run stereo.

2 words of advice -

1) reduce the stereo width (when possible) on your plugins to reduce phasing. Especially in your pianos!!!!
2) make sure that your midi filters are only taking in one midi channel (at least on anything like ivory). Ex) ivory midi listen only to 1, not thru, then assign to 1 as well. Some plugs, in my experience, will try to play as many midi channels as are received. So, since my rd700sx sends 4 channels at once, ivory and other piano/organ plugins would try to play 4 of the same notes resulting in a very unpleasant sound!

These two steps took me from a weak piano sound, to one that sits well in a mix, and (while still not as "great" as stereo when available) still sounds easy better than my stage pianos ever did. :D

Cheers
Just play....

Receptor is an entirely stereo device, and all the plugins it runs are stereo.. However,if you want, you can use mono maker effect plugin (freeware from dfx, it is likely pre-installed on your system) and put that in the mixer bus. This will "mono-ize" the outputs so that the left and right outputs are appropriate summations of the L and R stereo signals.

If you just pan left or right, you are "missing" a lot of the audio information that would otherwise be there in the stereo image…

Thanks to both of you for the replies.

In solo situations I'm very happy running stereo, but in some live situations I am forced into mono. The monomaker plugin looks like it will do the trick!

It should… very nice tool to have since it does offer some amount of control over how you collapse the stereo image.

And nothing wrong with running mono… The Rolling Stones STILL run their entire FOH system in Mono. I found that hard to believe, but that is what they think sounds best and that is what they do!!

Does this plugin work in RACK mode? I successfully installed it but it only seems to be available while in mixer mode.

EDIT: I had some sort of operator error. The plugin shows up and works fine in Rack mode as well as mixer mode. For some reason all of my dfx plugins were hiding from Rack mode until I flushed the cache (for an unrelated problem). All is well, nothing to see here, move along, move along... :)

If the plugin does not have a user interface, it won't be openable in Rack mode, but it still should run… you won't be able to control the interface, so save the patch in Mixer mode of the settings you want, then open it up in Rack mode… should work okay.
