I gather that once Tim's people showed Ben the incriminating photos he really didn't have any choice but to cave in. He wanted to do the right thing by the PC people who had supported his company over a decade but, you know what they say, you f@#& one goat ...

Mainly though, I'm angry at Apple because of their power, I'm angry that they can and will restrict the availability of a product in such a way. I'm not surprised, this is exactly their modus operandi. I know that, Camel knew that. Nevertheless, I don't like it.
Apple is not restricting you in any way from using Alchemy - Just buy a MAC and Logic.
Sure, i can do that but, as a Windows-based Live user it means i must change my entire studio into an Apple-based one. That seems like a restriction to me.
I am also a Live user and I can tell you for certain Live runs just fine on a MAC.

This is largely urban legend. Microsoft's $150mil investment was more of a symbolic gesture of good will. Apple was still a multi-billion dollar company at the time. What saved Apple is the return of Steve Jobs, his restructuring of the company, eliminating wasteful R&D on tons of projects that weren't going anywhere, simplifying the product line and a massive refocus on software and OSX development (which was partially inherited from the work that'd been done at his previous company, NeXT).

No need to go as far as Logic. Cheap secondhand Mac Mini, 1Gig Ethernet switch, MIDIoverLAN and a copy of MainStage. And some audio cables. Use it as a sound module. VNC works just fine for the UI.

@ Tronam
A multi-billion dollar company? Sure. The going price was about 5 billion at one stage there. Several larger players considered buying it and passed.

But can you use the new Alchemy in Live?

Anyone worked out a way to get Logic Alchemy to recognise ratings from the previous version? It would save a lot of work. All my libraries are there and appear to be working, which is amazing in itself, but I would love not to have to redo my ratings.

I can understand why some people are pissed of (i payed myself 1000€+ for Alchemy and additional sound banks).
That's life.
There is no lifetime upgrade..... only FL-Studio maybe :D

Has anyone got Ableton and Alchemy talking to each other via Mainstage and Soundflower yet?

As a Mac Ableton Live user (with Alchemy 1), am I right in thinking that I just need to fork out £30 for Mainstage 3 and download Soundflower for free (https://rogueamoeba.com/freebies/soundflower/) and I'm good to go?

What are the downsides to this strategy? High latency?

I would try myself but I'm at work, so I would love to hear some feedback on this strategy.

Post

I'd think that because Mainstage is meant for live performance that latency wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure it supports Rewire so couldn't you just rewire it into Live?

I'm sure there has to be some sort of catch to this, I highly doubt they'd give away all of their synths and effects in a $30 bundle without needing Logic - what would be the point of Logic then (besides the sequencer or those who are used to it)? If they are the full synths, then Hackintosh or Mac + $30 for Mainstage + Rewire into whatever DAW you like seems like a pretty great deal.

Post

With Rewire I think Mainstage has to be the master, and Live the slave.

This means Ableton Live cannot use other VSTs and midi devices... I want to use Mainstage as a glorified instrument in Live and not the other way round, so this would not be suitable for me.

Post

Ah, I guess that's the catch. Makes sense.
