Zebra 2 - how to make a breathy AAHH vox?

Hello folks. Really *need* a good quality vowel AAHH sound. Needs to have an airy quality to it, almost as if sung sottovoce.
Any pointers? I'm going nuts using OSC1 and drawing all kinds of curves, using comb filters, etc. But can't get the "air", the resulting pad always sounds too thick or not "vocal" enough.

On a totally different tack: I noticed that moving the predelay in a longish verb causes a vocal like glitch.
Was intent in programming and when the glitch happened I had the feeling there was someone talking somewhere down the hallway ... scared the living cr*p out of me! :)

Cheers

Try using a formant filter and adjusting the vowel control.

You might also try introducing a noise oscillator (white noise) into the signal chain to add some air.

Typically these types of pads are created using s&s type synths (M1, D50, Omnisphere) etc so it's not ideal to use Zebra, but there's no harm in trying.

You can download my free patches from padsheaven:

"Middle OOHS", could be a good starting point to make your own.

"Soprano in the Wind" from padsheaven 2 can work for some new ideas also:

Also check out Ed Harveys free "SimChoir" from the u-he preset library.

Thank you! Hadn't thought about the noise osc - good tip! It probably would also help to be able to sum an out-of-phase clone of the same voice, but I think this is beyond the scope of this otherwise excellent noisemaker.

BTW what do you mean by a "s&s synth"?

I created a choir sound by having a different approach than using special waveforms or formant filters. I used a comb filter on detuned sawtooths followed by an allpass filter and some noise. The result and the patch can be downloaded.
I would be happy if someone could improve it further.

+1 for Allpass filter (especially in parallel with the main signal).

There's a somewhat more polished version of that in the 'Absolute Zebra' freebies...

There are lots of different ways that you can make vocal-like sounds in zebra. However, as was mentioned earlier, for the classic 'breathy' vocals you are probably better off with a "s+s" (samples and synthesis) synth as it's very difficult to get the 'air' to sound un-synthy.

Excuse the shameless self-promotion, but the best breathy vocals I've ever managed is "A Choir" in the Absolute Zebra soundset, which used custom wavetables and a ridiculous amount of ... :bang:
A Choir

It shows, Ed! I hope you agree it was worth all the :bang:
