Tracktion Software

I've noticed this weirndess in the past couple days--

Sometimes when I pick file-related commands, Tracktion simply won't execute them. There won't be a crash, but it won't do what I request.

For example, I pressed the "import-->audio or midi file" option, and nothing happened. No dialog box, no nothing. I figured the program had hung, but nope, I could do every other function fine. Went back to the button and tried again, but no luck.

Then I tried the "change source file", and same thing. No dice.

This happened directly AFTER I had altered a file with Audacity (launched from the "edit with audacity.exe" menu command in Tracktion). Since Audacity and Tracktion don't really mesh all that well together, I have to save my edited audio files with another filename and then import it back into my edit. But, as I mentioned, no go.

I wonder if there's any correlation, or if it was just flukey.

Shameless bump. Any comments? Anyone experience anything similar, or do you figure it was some sort of fluke?

So it's only ignoring me out of spite, not for lack of love.

I'm sorry, Tracktion... I couldn't do anything without you! <strokes lovingly>

On a related note,

I re-scanned my plugins folder, and a bunch of them came up broken, including stalwarts like Crystal.dll and TriangleII.dll. What the....????

I think I've finally installed too many plugins and Tracktion wants me to clean it up. I mean, I have a ridiculous amount of stuff installed.

Wow man that sux. Broken Plug-ins? I wouldnt even try to guess whats going on there. Hopefully you get it working soon. Good luck.

It's really weird, because the plugins in the ignore list are ones that were never ignored before.

I have literally hundreds of plugins installed right now, though, which may have something to do with it. The idea was to install EVERYTHING I've downloaded, then sort through it and pick out the ones I want to keep permanently installed. Well, I haven't gotten around to the second bit yet.

I had the same problem with the file dialog not opening with an earlier version of tracktion.

When I installed v1.5.1.16 the problem went away.

Are you using the most recent version?

I don't use audacity btw.

I've noticed that when I do a rescan that the ignored plugins list gains some extra entries but they are not working plugins just random dlls.

I'm using the most recent Tracktion. I'll have to look into the ignored list a bit more closely. All I know is that one day it was empty and the next day it gained 8 occupants. I have no explanation.

It could be a dodgy plugin that you installed recently. I'd try removing the eight new plugins one at a time.

without wanting to get too technical, it sounds to me like something is rather bolloxed.

Can't say I've experienced anything like the issues you describe in any of the newer builds, and I'm sure you'd have heard[1] if some other forum members had.

Right now, I'd take a run at snadkisking your harddrive, and clean installing Tracktion.

obPossibility: I guess if one plugin does somethign really nasty when initializing that corrupts some memory, all bets are off for any plugins that are susbsequently scanned. Or to put it another way, Tracktion may not have failed to open all those plugins, rather on rogue plugin may have killed the lot....

A couple of things - and please, I'm no expert, so ignore what I say if it's nonsense please!

FIrstly, regarding Audacity, this is one free programme that I had read good things about in the computer press, so I tried it out. I tried it as a standalone and "edit with..." within Tracktion.

Perhaps Audacity hated me, perhaps I hated it, or even both ... who knows? Anyway it hung, crashed, froze up the system nearly every time I tried to do anything with it so I gave up. Call me jaded, whatever, but I thought that Audacity sucks... just my opinion though!

Anyway, I'm not sure what it was you wanted to do with Audacity that you can't do using Tracktion's own editing functions or using other plugs? (For the record, I think Tracktion is awesome in the way it slices audio when you scroll in to sample level...)

Secondly, regarding plug-ins, my plug-in folder got similarly fat at one point, mostly because I was auditioning too many demos and freeware plugs and never deleting them. I found that it became annoying, and a really messy way to work, so...

Firstly I decided to move all of my plugs out of Tracktion's plug folder, and store them all in a seperate folder directly on the hard drive (i.e. away from programmes as a whole). Then I organised them into sub-folders, e.g. "Effects", "Synths", "Demos", etc.

Once this was done I redirected Tracktion to scan through this new folder. I took a good look at the list of "ignored" plugs, and deleted those that I considered safe. Leaving the rest (only about 3 or 4 anyway) has never posed a problem. Tracktion just carries on ignoring them forever more.)

For example, lots of plugs install VST and DX versions, and Tracktion will ignore the DX versions...

If this is all obvious, basic nonsense, then sorry for wasting your time!!

Either way, I hope you solve your problems soon...

No, you haven't wasted my time at all. Friendly advice is never a waste of time, because regardless of information, the community atmosphere is enhanced.

Valley: I agree that it may be bullocksed. I'll do a clean install soon just to be safe. Interesting point about the plugins-- I've installed some demoes and betas lately, so it's likely one of those! Cheers!

404: The strange thing is that not one of the 'ignored' plugins is one that was previously ignored, and I'm loathe to delete the synths.

Hopefully I'll find the culprit plug and the rest will be safe.

HQ: I use Audacity for its "amplify" effect. There might be something similar in Tracktion, but I haven't found it. Basically I zero in on a word or phrase that's too quiet compared to the rest and boost its amplitude. I've tried compression and volume envelopes and the whole deal, but when you're dealing with a weak .wav to begin with, the only tool that's satisfactory for me is increasing the amplitude of the .wav itself without trying to fix it with a million plugs. I like to go right to the source.

I like Audacity fine, but it's not seamless to use, ya know?

For the plugins, yeah, I have to trim away the excess because it IS annoying to work with the tree the way I have it right now. One thing I HAVE always done is keep them in a separate folder, though, so I have THAT one covered at least.

Also, when I get the option, I don't install DX; and if I don't have the option, I use The AnalogX DX plugin remover to get rid of them.
