Who supports a right click pop up tool bar in bitwig? Let's make our voices heard :)

As someone mentioned above, right clicking a note should delete it, and right clicking on an empty space brings up a context based menu with tool selection.
Though I am a keyboard shortcut kind of person, somehow in Bitwig it didn't quite catch on, and I still prefer using the mouse.

Perhaps it's just a thing of bragging with the stuff they have that other DAW's don't have?Live Transmission wrote:I'm wondering what agenda Bitwig team has; a sophisticated browser seems very nice, but a. it definitely leads to more work regarded to bugs and b. wouldn't it be more considerate to implement essential features instead? C. there are some irritating bugs which are pretty old afaik. I'd say: first things first. D. Maybe it's me, but I think the progress of BWS has to come to a point where the devs really have to make their minds up regarded to point a, b and c.
Yes, some key elements are missing, but if you put out the advanced stuff first, people will probably asume you will at some point add the essentails too. At least that was in my case. The fact that you can have more than one project open was wow for me, and pretty much sealed the deal (even though I wasn't 100% sure at the time).

@TasmanianAngel
So true. I can compare different mixes, exchange elements between projects. However, I'd prefer consolidation of existing features above further implementation of new features atm. Just my opinion.

I think they're under the F keys by default but can be changed in Keyboard Shortcuts.Bobby L'Avenir wrote:We could have both like Studio One which has key strokes 1-8 assigned to the tools, this keeps both camps happy campersHamHat wrote:Couldn't agree more. so + 1000. That being said I like that the number keys 1-5 switch tools, much faster and less clutter than right clicking to pick tools imo.Regnas wrote: The most common tasks like draw/delete etc should be all done with just one tool.
What I can't fathom is why Bitwig's piano roll works the way it works now.... double click to add notes?? switch to erase tool to delete?? c'mon, this is insane.....
The piano roll is the weak spot of Bitwig atm imho, and I hope they will change that.....

Sure, but when you're running against Ableton, your strongest weapons are features Ableton DOESN'T haveLive Transmission wrote:@TasmanianAngel

FL's the only DAW I've seen where right click deletes a note ..?TasmanianAngel wrote:As someone mentioned above, right clicking a note should delete it, and right clicking on an empty space brings up a context based menu with tool selection.

Fruitys piano roll and tool implementation is superior, only those that haven't tried it can deny this.digitalfix wrote:FL's the only DAW I've seen where right click deletes a note ..?TasmanianAngel wrote:As someone mentioned above, right clicking a note should delete it, and right clicking on an empty space brings up a context based menu with tool selection.

Just click and draw your note patterns........just one click to draw a whole pattern!!!!!

Yes, the current object selection and pen tools could easily be combined:VariKusBrainZ wrote:Fruitys piano roll and tool implementation is superior, only those that haven't tried it can deny this.

- left-click on an empty space to create a note
- left-click on a note to select it
- drag on an empty space for "lasso" selection
- drag on a note to move or resize it
- right click on empty space to show the contextual menu
- right click on a note to delete it
I don't think the eraser tool has any use for midi (it's easier to just resize or erase notes), and the cutting tool is so specialized that it can safely stay out of the way in the tool bar.
The only other useful tool imho is the time selection one, and could be on a modifier, e.g. alt+drag, an additional mouse button, or a button combination (i.e. left+right drag).
I think the "right-click toolbar" is a band-aid for the problem, not its solution.
Bitwig inherited those tools from legacy DAWs, which probably designed the interface so that the arranger, audio editor and midi editor all use the same global tools, but in the end many of them feel cumbersome or out of place in one context or another. I don't think the pen makes any sense in the arranger (double click to create/delete is perfect there); and it doesn't seem to do anything in the audio editor. Whereas the eraser and cutting tools (which could probably be combined into one) are only useful there.
Consistency is important in UI design, but in this case I think at least the midi editor need special treatment.
EDIT: actually there is one flaw in the solution I described above: you can't enter notes and resize them on the fly (or set their velocity). So an alternate solution would be:
- left-drag on empty space to create a note and resize it / set its velocity
- right-drag on en empty space for "lasso" selection
- (plus all of the above)
There can still be a selection tool in the tool bar (since right-drag is not an obvious mechanism), but the point is that you can do everything with just one tool.

I don't think it can be faster, since it requires additional keystrokes between different actions, whereas with a unified tool every action consist of a single click or drag. Also, you have to remember which tool is currently active, which is a problem as soon as you divide between two tasks (e.g. to tweak the synth, or just try melodies on an instrument before writing them).polarity-dnb wrote:why not just hit 1,2,3,4 on the keyboard? much faster
Finally, it requires to use both hands. When step-recording will be implemented, being able to easily do everything with just the mouse will be a big plus: one hand on the synth/controller, the other on the mouse, leads to a very fast workflow. Even now I usually try melodies and chords on a mini piano keyboard before editing them in the piano roll. This leads to an awful lot of double-clicking (the pen tool is useless because it doesn't allow resizing)...

Im thinking about buying a Razor Naga mouse sometime soon, I would map the side buttons to key commands that I use the most in Bitwig. But Im perfectly fine just using the track pad on my Macbook. I just use the number buttons on the top of the keyboard to switch tools. I do hope at some point Bitwig gets a smart tool though.
