Yes, you've got it right. You can do it anyway round you wish. In most genres of music however kick is usually king and everything else (especially bass) gets out of the way. Other usefull examples would be duck a guitar or synth to make room for a vocal, or duck string or pad to make room for a lead etc.
Although if you like this feature, to be honest MSpectralDynamics does this better than anything!

Excellent video! I'll look forward to more. I just bought Mautodynamic (as you can tell being I'm the OP), but I'm looking forward to diving in and seeing what all it can do. I was testing several EQs and decided on Mautodynamic and the next day it went on sell. Good times!
