Getting a record trigger from my sequencer.

Please help ... spent a few hours trying to get recording to start in Tracktion 5 when i start my outboard sequencer (Roland MC 505).
I want to record audio from my 505 and have the recordings accurately synced to timeline so I can record separate parts to remix ... all without having to worry about lining up timing of parts. Basically want Tracktion to start recording when I press play on my 505.

I tried setting up a control surface to do this - cant get my start button on 505 to be mapped (( ... I did set up the portamento on controller to act as a record trigger just to see if anything would work from the 505 to trigger recording start - and this did work...

Any pointers please...

A starting point might be to verify the 505 is really sending MIDI MTC messages. Midi-OX is a fairly useful program for various things; but one is that it will MONITOR and display data coming in from the 505. Shut down traction, run Midi-OX and monitor input on the MIDI interface you use. WHEN you start the 505 sequencer, you should see whether or not it is sending MTC start and timing.
PS - create a very simple 4-bar sequence of just a few notes while you analyze.

If it IS, then it's a Tracktion setting. If it ISN'T, then you may have to enable a feature on the 505 to send sequence control messages, which may not be the default.

(I recently used MidiOX to determine why aftertouch was so problematic with Tracktion - It pointed out my older VFX send key pressure more "gracefully" but an XKEY simply FLOODED the MIDI interface with pressure messages every few milliseconds...)
