And to HS for the new patch. Inspiring also and as always.
How to get this lead sound?

He switches presets at 8:20. Before that it's all practically the same sound.

Yup, exactly, but the patch @Howard posted sound very different when adjusting the filter cutoff...EvilDragon wrote:I think he just adjusted LFO amount to filter cutoff or something similar.
Snarky Puppy is THE THING for me right now - incredible groove, incredible musicians, and Henry Cory is just pure craziness..bftucker wrote:In any case, thanks to the OP for posting the SP video. Very inspiring!

Yes, well filters in Diva and KK are not the same. If you want exactly the same sound, you should probably get a KK.

A whole lot of those instruments are being recorded with mics, including maybe his monitor. I'd bet that is a big part of why you can't quite get the sound...I'd recommend experimenting with micing a real cabinet - start with a pignose - for that type of distortion.
Ignorable opinion: he's not a synth player but a keyboardist, channeling Chick Corea, complete with Chick's not-very-virtuosic LFO vibrato which should have stayed in the early 70s. It's a very highly "under the fingers" solo. imo the sound is not that special, and while the playing is very practiced, it is not particularly original nor inspiring to someone who, like me, has listened to Chick Corea for more than 40 years. He barely alters the sound while playing, and doesn't do so in a particularly expressive manner, which to me screams "keyboardist" not "synth player." I don't think he used anything other than the stock joystick for control - not even a pedal. But then, that's just how most synth playing is to my ears. Synth playing is still in the dark ages when you consider the potential of the instrument. Example: compare to this Don Preston solo released in July of 1972:

We've come such a long way in 43 years eh? Since the likes of Jan Hammer in the 70s and 80s, the world of the synthesizer (as an instrument played by a human) has practically collapsed. With the current focus on "creating" sounds, rather than playing them (or insisting on finely-crafted, custom instruments), we are getting even farther removed from the synthesizer as an instrument.
Sorry to be such a grump. It's just frustrating to me how unimaginative musicians can be, and how little has changed regarding true synth players (well, there aren't many).

Thanks for comment. I fully agree with that synth playing didn't evolve at all, and that there are not many synth players out there who would take advantage of the sonic possibilities. I also think (and it frustrates me) that the whole music world moves from playing music to just "producing" music.
But, I really like Henry Cory - I don't think at all that he's unimaginative. I also listened to Chick Corea a lot, and I just like the stuff these guys do with synths (not very virtuosic vibrato? yes, but who cares). Check some of the other videos of Henry, maybe this changes your opinion about him:
