My current setup for crunchy/gainy tones is as follows:
PVNoNoise
TS-999/TSE 808 2.0
PVDHP Badguy (Bogner Ecstasy preamp sim, still beta - but already insane!)
TPA-1 (EL34s)
NadIR loaded with Mesa Trad 4x12 impulse from Sperimental Pack

Scuffham S-Gear is the most dynamic ITB guitar simulator I have tried...

ReValver is the next best one I reckon...

I also have Guitar Rig 5 and some Amplitube stuff,but they feel less dynamic and a little "plastic" to me..

But sometimes that non-dynamic "plastic" sheen is what the track calls for...

There's also a few great "freebies" out there - like the Ignite Amps stuff and others....

But my favourite ITB clean guitar sound is a hybrid using an "X" tube preamp,NI/Softube Vari Mu as the line stage amp,Red Wirez mixIR2 with some of their impulses and the NI/Softube VC-2A at the end of the chain...

Valhalla UberMod and Valhalla Room and various other effects if I want the tracks to be printed wet...

That setup sounds great - really dynamic - and you can re-amp it as needed...

The "X" tube preamp is my secret weapon so I need that one to stay a secret

I don't do high-gain - mostly cleans or just a bit of "hair"

software : either Boogex2 or LINE6 PodFarm

Now that all the usual suspects have been summoned, I give you the truly best amp sim created so far: Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959 by Softube for the UAD and Apollo platform:

Even if you had that amp sitting on top of the best cabinet, with a couple of high-end mics and mic-pres, plus the room and know-how to give that amp justice you simply coulnd't be bothered because the plugin is so much easier to use and delivers on all accounts with no compromise.

For that plug-in alone I got me a Apollo Twin. Just saying.

I looked at that whole system when I was looking for a new interface last January. It just looked like a deep hole that I'd be continuously tossing my money into, so I passed. I know it is a great system, but.... my wife would divorce me. Got a Fireface 802 instead. Happy as Larry!

Recabinet 4 is, by far, my absolute favorite amp sim at the moment. Amplitube Mesa is a second, neck-and-neck.

Revalver CAN sound good, but some of the amps are atrocious sounding. Rev 4's Mesa gets smoked by Amplitube's new releases.

I'm not a guitarist, really, but I've found a lot of liveliness in my Peavey TransTubeFex rack unit. Am I the only person here with one of these?

They've all got their strengths and weaknesses and tone is subjective, which are both cliches but true.

Lately, though, I've been obsessing about note clarity and definition, as well as the sim not burying the original sound of the guitar when you crank the gain.

And the guitar plug in Waves CLA does something magical in those areas I'm simply unable to get anywhere close to in any other sim, especially when you turn on Reamp. Yeah, it's got a fairly limited palette, but I love the colors it does offer. Somehow they've managed to get rid of a lot of the intermodulation distortion that fuzzes your sound out.

... Maybe I just need to learn how to EQ better...

Somehow I always end up using line6 pod farm or gearbox. They seem to just seat in the mix well.

Surprisingly EZmix has a lot of very useful presets (especial for metal lead and rhythm parts).
