VST instruments going out of tune in Mulab 5.5.1

I've had this issue for a while now, with certain combinations of VST instruments, when I add one more VST the new one starts going out of tune quite suddenly for no apparent reason. In my current project I'm using Play Gypsy strings, and also some of the MuSynths and Mudrums. Have tried many times messing around with the Audio Setup (changing buffer size and CPU load) to no avail. Sometimes restarting Mulab works temporarily, but after a few moments whatever the new instrument is that I'm trying to record will suddenly go out of tune a bit. Right now it's going up by nearly a tone. Any ideas? I've just finished a soundtrack and had next to no problems with it, but using mostly synthesizers. Maybe Gypsy is a lot to handle? I use Windows 8.1 64 bit, (but running the 32 bit Mulab), have 8GB Ram. Fairly new system really.

Never heard of such issue. The only reason i can think of is a pitchbend event somewhere? Do you have a MIDI controller connected? Maybe its pitchbender is broke a bit?

Post

Well I use an M Audio keystation 61. I've looked for pitchbending in parameters and nothing shows up. It's just blank. It seems to happen when I'm trying to record new events specifically. It's fine until I start playing and/or recording. Then it'll just jump up a bit.

<EDIT> Okay actually the problematic one I'm having right now I just checked and yes there's a 'pitchbend up' parameter going on. You think it's time to get a new keyboard?

Post

It could also be a USB issue, the cable I use is probably as old as the Keystation, which is about 8 years. But more probably the keystation. Odd problem, maybe dust got in the wheel.

It's both I've noticed now. Some show a slight pitchbend, others don't.

Check your Midi devices (midi keyboard/controller).
I've had that insane thing happening, when my Korg M1 finally broke a little after 26 years and the modulation circuits started to freak out, sending pitch bend information out unprovoked.
It's certainly a possibility!
Other than that, I've never experienced any of such troubles in MuLab by itself.

OH, you do know about that already. :? ...well, let me just assure you that that's a possibility! :scared:

Put a Event Monitor module just before your 'out of tune' instrument and check if you see anything odd.

Did the monitor show pitchbend? I thought there was something funky like it only showing controller- and note events?! Could be wrong...

Post

Will check these tomorrow, thanks guys.

Ok took the keystation apart and sure enough there's a weird black mark on the connecting part of the controller used for pitchbend..., probably need a replacement. In the meantime how do I block any pitchbend events in Mulab? I have to keep using this keyboard for now.

Post

I don't see a global way to block all incoming pitchbend events. What you could do is set the pitchbend range of the used synths to 0. Not ideal as that means you can't use pitchbend envelopes either, well, more precise, they won't have effect then.

If you're using a 32-bit Windows PC, you might be able to still use MIDI Yoke and MIDI OX to filter the events. Get the two installed, then set up a MIDI routing in MIDI OX from your hardware MIDI In and out to MIDI Yoke. On this route, add a filter to remove the pitchbend events. In MuLab, set the MIDI In to read from MIDI Yoke.

MIDI Yoke is "virtual MIDI cable"; I think there may be 64-bit Windows alternatives (Bome?). MIDI OX is a MIDI jack of all trades. I'm not aware of anything else quite like it.

Also experiencing the same thing with MUX ( VSTi ) version 7.x

I first noticed synths going out of tune ( samplers first mostly ) when changing sample rate between projects

Then Serum and other synths started to go randomly out of tune , around 1 semitone

It is not Pitch Bend ( no events in the monitor )

How can i prevent this from happening?
