I like almost all amp sims, yummy. As far as effects go, I'm starting to really like Audified Multi drive pedals a lot, and I rarely hear it mentioned. It's good for a slightly dirty sound :http://www.kvraudio.com/product/multi-d ... y-audiffex

S-gear for me. Before I got it I used Amplitube, but whenever I open Amplitube now it just sounds silly to me compared to S-gear. Not a high gain guy.

It seems to be a different version/plugin? The one used in the YouTube video has Presence and Depth controls while the one in the Blogspot link does not. It also has a different graphics/skin. The Depth control is kinda essential to achieve the tone in the video.

The 'Endl' sims sound awesome. Even better than the 'Randal' imho! Might be my new favorite sims.

For all who like Simulanalog, TH-2 is the latest revision of that technology. The Twin and Lynchbox in TH-2 are good.

Good high gain Amps are TSE X50II and Amplitube Mesa.

Here's my favorite guitar amp sim setup: FR-Gate 87 > Pod Farm Preamps (console) > Pod Farm Distortion (Tube Drive) > Klanghelm SDRR (tube) > BX_Greenscreamer > BX_Yellowdrive > Softrave Vintage analog filter >followed by bx-Bass Dude or bx-megasingel or bx_chandler amps.

Amplitube for me, hands down. Loved the Orange and Vox stuff especially from the get-go, but there are a lot of cool sounds in many of the amps, including some I wouldn't expect to like based on what they are. (Not a Slash fan for instance, but there's some great stuff in those heads, not what he does, but very cool.)

Then there's the new Mesa stuff... Holy crap they're good.

Not because I'm a metal guy, I'm not. Not a massive gain guy in general usually, often hang out in kinda-dirty-but-really-more-like-fat territory, and they're just awesome for that. Fat fat fat fat fat fat fat for days, really responsive, touch sensitive, organic feel, with this really unique weight and hair on 'em even when they're barely distorting at all. Love 'em clean, semi-clean, driven, and slammed. There's nothing else like them. Highest recommendation.

(FWIW, Scuffham would be second probably, nice but much more limited than Amplitube, and not in the same league as the AT Mesas. Guitar Rig just no. GTR meh. Hate Revalver 3, haven't tried 4, scared of their newer copy protection BS.)

one thing i might recommend is a tube pre-amp before chaining into the i/o device. you can get an ART for around $35. ymmv

Worst idea possible.
When recording a DI track, you want it to be as clean and true-to-life as possible. Every little grain of dirt in the DI signal is amplified later on and will add hiss and rumble.

When you're recording a DI track for a bass that will be used as-is and without an amp sim, then that might be OK. But for guitar DIs going into amp sims - stay clear of anything that "saturates" or "adds warmth", like tubes.

Especially low-voltage tubes in $30 China gear where the tubes aren't even part of the amplification circuit, like the little ART thing you recommended.

EDIT: just saw that the ART has an input impedance of 840KOhm, hahaha, that's less than an actual guitar amp and even the majority of cheap interfaces around. You'll have a pretty hard time getting back all that missing high-end with an EQ later on.
