But knowing in the back of my mind that maybe just maybe at some point a project started in 2015 may not load properly in the future and no fix is possible is a bit disconcerting.

Hi

Every plugin, DAW software, operating system - not to mention any and all of the hardware innards can all become obsolete, unsupported or compromised in some way or another.

My feelings are that you get your computer, hardware and o/s up to date as best as you can, check your software works in it and just get on with using the set up.

I have a half decent quad core computer (few years old) in storage with windows XP installed - in about 3 months I will be setting it up again - I intend to (probably) go with a complete Drive erase, install Win10, go 64bit update/upgrade my software (vst's) where possible and move on.

I would hope to get at least a decade use from this scenario.

I'm kind of surprised that Alpha 3 is getting retired soon too. Albino also got retired and Morphox is really aimed at the morphing capabilities between 2 patches, so.. no standard VA flagship synth left

Could this mean a new VA (and perhaps FM) synth from Linplug is coming in the near future?

You could always make a mixdown so you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

Albino didn't really get "retired". There was a dispute between Linplug and Rob Papen.

I'm least surprised that Alpha was dropped since it's really been topped by newer synths.

But I do hope Linplug releases new plugins.....maybe an RM VI...........

Having to do a mixdown every time I use a plugin would make me not want to use it at all....

I'm with you on that, but then again I took advice from Gareth Jones in a interview I saw recently the importance of "committing" meaning that you got to record what you do.

Ummm no you don't. That's the beauty of software. Otherwise we might as well go back to using Reel to Reels

You can get older versions of Alpha there.

This used to be the 'private' download page for LinPlug customers and was supposed to be a secret despite being literally the first result when you googled 'linplug downloads'.

I guess with them cleaning house they don't feel the need to keep it secret anymore.

Needless to say, although you can download these products you need licenses (and serials) to use them.

Demoing impressions:

relectro - didn't find it musical at all, even used in small amounts. It also adds 50ms of latency.

Organ 3 - decent sound and low CPU.

Alpha 3 - dry, strong sound with low CPU. Love the GUI in XL size.

Octopus - very easy to cook agressive sounds (brought a huge smile on my face). But the GUI kinda burns the eyes.

RMV - truly a BEAST and very easy to use. Cons: GUI a little too small plus in Studio One 2 and 3 the CPU usage is ridiculous. 5 drums playing (sampled or synthesized, didn't matter) took the CPU to around 20%!!! In Live 9, the same 5 drums from above only took 6%. Something's wrong, because I usually get very close figures between the two DAWs (Win7 x32). Anyone tested or using it in Studio One?

Strange. The CPU use of RMV given by Reaper is much more around 1.5-2% on a rather old laptop.

This synth really impressed me too, still have some power and it's easy to use (???what do you think???). I like, that it has no extra FX like reverb and delay... you can use your favorite ones. Therefore it has really low CPU usage (1%) in my old notebook!

BTW:
DUNE CM has some bugs in my PC, sometimes it freezes, when I hit a key and when I hear a sounds. Alpha is great replacement in my opinion, it has no similar bugs - or I did not noticed that yet.

I tried RMV demo in FL Studio 12, but it freezed DAW sometimes. But it has low CPU usage too, like Alpha. Only 2-4% CPU.
