Has anyone tried the fishman tripleplay midi guitar controller on receptor? Looks like it could be fun if it's compatible.

Post

There are many people using the TriplePlay with Receptor and it works WONDERFULLY.

Thanks, Bryan. I am very tempted.

I have been on hold in FTP purchase because Fishman said a year ago that the device would only track one note at a time unless used through their software. Is there an account of someone using the the device through Receptor and having perfect results? Or is it possible to load the UI into Receptor?

Would love to hear more from Muse about this.
Was there an issue? Has it been resolved?

Post

First I've heard of any issues. Chris Halaby, the owner of KVR is a Receptor user (he founded Muse Research) and a big time Fishman Triple Play user… let me check with him…

Thanks Bryan, I'd love to hear what you find out.

So… we just got done shooting a video with Chris Halaby playing his Godin Triple Play-equipped guitar through a Receptor using a Roland FC-300 to control it. Works amazingly well, and sounds even better!

He uses it to layer synth sounds with his guitar, as well as to solo using MIDI synths instead of guitar sounds (like flutes and trumpets). I asked about multi-timbral mode and that simply isn't the way he uses it, but he did put a call into a friend who said it can be done.

Apparently, the Triple Play electronics have their own patches that can be programmed using the Triple Play software. To program up a preset you need to use the Triple Play software and create a USER preset, and then there is a System Control tab at the bottom of the User Preset page that lets you set up the patch to either be mono-timbral (all strings play the same sounds, but of course at different pitches based on finger) or multi-timbral (each string is sending on its own MIDI channel, which allows different sounds to be assigned to each string).

We didn't have time to video that, but apparently it can be done and it sounds pretty simply. Would love a TriplePlay owner to confirm this for us and post the results!?!?!?

All the best

Bryan

Yes!! This was the concern and I'm hoping multi timbral works! An example on video was an upright bass patch for he bottom two strings and electric piano for the top four.
I know that pad controllers and keyboards like KMI and Arturio stuff has software that is programmed with a computer in which you can install the accompanying software and the device saves the MIDI settings. I hope that little attachment does the same.

I spoke to Fishman, and you use the system in HARDWARE MODE and set up a Hardware Patch to have mono mode on 6 individual MIDI channels. This is stored on the Triple Play itself, and then you can connect it to a Receptor and have different synths assigned to different strings as programmed in Receptor. Fishman says they would be happy to answer questions about how to configure the pickup to do this, but don't let them tell you that it only works this way with the Triple Play software… it doesn't.

Awesome Bryan!! This is great news, and that makes total sense. It will take some time to balance out all the settings (volume, pan, gain, etc.) but hopefully not too much. And once it's set perhaps saving that whole thing as a Preset will be helpful. Say, if I did save six Instrument tracks as a Preset is there a way I can insert that Preset (instrument set) into another preset? For instance, I have different Presets for my 8-audio inputs for my different bands. If I was in rehearsal and someone said, "hey! How 'bout using that cool guitar setup you had on that other song"! Is there a way to quickly load in six preset instrument tracks with one drag and drop or would I have to load each of them separately into the existing template (preset) I had presently instantiated for that rehearsal?

Trigger pulled. Bought the Fender Strat OEM version (really don't like the wart mount version even though it's portable). Should arrive by Christmas. I guess Santa felt like I was a good boy this year.

SO while I wait greedily for Santa's sleigh, beyond just the ability to trigger what-have-you synth sounds I am also interested in using the fishman for guitar modeling; i.e. Acoustic, 12 string, Sitar, Banjo, Mando, Lute, Znajeb, and Bulweeber. Can anybody recommend vst's that are ideal for playing guitar like instruments with a GUITAR controller (as opposed to Keyboard)?

Just some food for thought before spending too much time with setting up six instruments and using the multitimbral approach: I have been using midi guitar for years-currently with an axon converter and roland pickup on my taylor acoustic guitar. After a whole lot of time messing around with setting up very complex patches to have scenarios like bass on the bottom two strings piano on the top four, I end up having the best experience using simpler approaches. Not to say that there isn't fruitful territory to explore with the channel per string method, but I have generally found it to be unwieldy in the editing process. The solution for the bass scenario that has worked well is to set up a patch using one of the kontakt electric basses and use the muse interface to limit the keyrange to the E on string four, then set up a melody instrument like SWAM viola with the keyrange set above the fourth string E. I have had the best expressive experience using melody instruments set to mono (one voice) modes.

If you do want to experiment with the benefits of 6 string mode, there is a piece of software developed by evenharmonic that helps with this process (I have not tried it): http://evenharmonic.com/products/gtak5

Some instruments I love to play with midi guitar: Orange Tree Passion Flute and Native Flutes, Embertone Blakus Cello and Crystal Flute, AAS Lounge Lizard, big atmospheric patches with NI Absynth.
I recommend spending the most time getting the setup of the pickup's sensitivity exactly right-that is what will determine how well virtual instruments will respond to your playing. It can be a slow process, but the process is worth it!

I did buy the gtak midi guitar software for kontakt, It works well with the kontakt 5 factory library, but I have not had much success setting it up with any 3rd party sample libraries. I think it would be worth while if you do not own many other sample libraries and don't want to spend a lot of time optimizing the kontakt patches for midi guitar use.
