Mostly, I use synth basses these days since I am always working with them.
Plus, a synth bass can be designed very specifically for whatever song I happen to be working on.
My "signature" bass is DUNE 1 layered with Charlatan and it's a winner every time
I have all of the Scarbee basses, including the original Gigastudio and Blue,Black and Red versions as well as the Komplete Ultimate versions and the only one I occasionally use is the MM bass...
These days I prefer to dial up sounds on synths instead of using samples...
The synths load a lot faster and the sounds are much more "alive"...
Also - like some previous posters have said, the synths can be tweaked to fit the track better...
The only thing I am really using samples now is acoustic pianos, strings and some orchestral instruments as well as drums and percussion...
Yep...Additive synthesis is pretty good for acoustic emulations..BERFAB wrote:I Turns out, Image Line's Morphine has a pretty great set of bass presets. And Morphine uses very few resources and loads in a snap. A dusting of FX on top and I'm really good to go.

You can also dial up some pretty good E Bass sounds in Z3TA+2 as well as other synths...
They take up a ton less hard drive space too...
BTW : The thing that really got me started using synths in place of sampled instruments was when I went to load the NI/Scarbee D6 clavinet and I remembered that it was 3.7 GB...
That's when I thought to myself," this is bloody crazy...3.7 GB for a clavinet ? "
A D6 type sound with a fast attack and a fast decay with a bit of distortion and some key release is quite easy to dial up on a synth and it uses very little CPU...
It works for me
No auto tune...

I have and love/use all the Scarbee basses in NI Komplete Ultimate 10. That said, I recently uninstalled a couple just to clear up HD space.
I've been playing bass guitar and upright for 30 years, I think the Scarbees sound great and respond realistically. Honestly, I can get a usable bass tone out of any synth/sampler as long as velocity is properly mapped to amp & filter.
They did make some weird stylistic decisions:
- no flatwound strings on P-Bass - WTF? Would be great for Motown-style thump
- flatwounds only on MM - aside from Bernard Edwards of Chic, the classic Music Man StingRay sound is all about roundwound strings
- plectrum only available on Rick bass - they should have at least done it with P-Bass too
- should do a fretless Jazz as well

Been using them since before he went to Native Instruments. I mainly use the MM and Rick, or fretless from Trillian but they're all really good. Tweaking EQ and velocity is essential.

Because of the continuation of this thread, I whipped out Ministry of Rock 2 and Ghostwriter yesterday. The results I came up with ensured my deletion of the Scarbee, the former two are much easier to deal with (shockingly so for East West), and sound way better imo.
But hey, happy to hear folks are making great music with Scarbee!

i used to have pre and jay DI basses. for their time, they were great, but i like Orange Tree and Ilya Efimov basses much better than these. the round-robin is extremely annoying, where it is clear which sound is index and which sound is middle finger. they couldn't be keyswitched AFAIK so sometimes i have to freeze them twice to make sure the notes i want ended up with a finger i want. i sold them eventually.
never tried Rick though.

I don't know what to write here that won't be censored, as I can only speak in profanity.

I kept the Rickenbacker, it's the only one out of the set I like at all. But that's just me.
