These famous drum grooves/patterns you'd like to find in a drum machine

Ehm, so...maybe it's time to pick up that old rock/waltz beat you could find on those simple drum machines on old organs back in the days.

Yep, it might be a tad tricky!Lotuzia wrote:Brazilian Samba/Batucada shuffle. I'll give it a try, but it certainly wont sound similar. You need some very specific sample sets to achieve this kind of beats ( Snare ensemble beatings etc ) . But the feeling/spirit is maybe possible to capture/approach more/less. A real challengeDoug1978 wrote:“Give It Up” by The Goodmen.

. We'll see.
Hats off to you though if you get something close to it

There used to be a CD which had all the songs that famous breaks were taken from.
Hmmm ... what will Google reveal?

I love Thin Lizzy and notice that The Prodigy nicked a bit of 'Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed' for their hit Breathe.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Some of the sounds on that track can be a bit tricky to reproduce. Like the steam sound and the hammering on pipes.
If I remembr correctly they took a simple drum machine from a farfisa organ and buildt a simple drumk kit. But I don't know if it's used on this track.
If you listen to the song Man Machine form the album with the same name you'll clearly hear how the drum pattern there are a direct development from the one that you hear on the previou's album's Metal On Metal and Trans Europa Express.
Kraftwerk's drum tracks are so unique that one coudl call them their trademark. Few or no one really copy them. As a difference form most other drum tracks.
(Ok Africa Bambaata. But Planet Rock was a direct theft )
It's like nearly nobody copy the bassline from Ultravox's Vienna. If you did - everyone would just refere to Vienna. I think Fancy is the only one who actually copyed that bassline. And indeed his track sounded like Vienna.
But the great thing with the drum track of Metal On Metal or Trans Europa Express is that it really invites to a zillion of variations.
The flanged steam thing is a burden to recreate accurately, and I'll need a little time to reproduce the metallic hits, but the 'partition'/patterns are there.
Kraftwerk conceptual approach for drums is amazing. While programming the beat, I was surprised that you can immediatly recognize it whatever the sounds in the slots. So simple, immediate, and in the same time so unique and *robotic but with a 'groove'*. Big fan of their work.

CoolLotuzia wrote:This said I might include a kind of motoric spirit preset ( did not even know the name), with the BD hammering the groove, adapted to a drum machine. Could be interesting. Well, I'll see.
You can also have a look here for more "motorik" tracks. You might be able to find something that better fits what you're looking for.

The metal sounds are, according to Karl Bartos, actually him and Flur hammerign on various metal pipes.
Not sure about the steam sound. But they used quite a lot of non sytesized sounds on that album.
Another interesting thing with the groove on those two tracks (for thoe who don't know - Metal On Metal is a sort of extension of the track Trans Europa Express) is that they really gives you a feeling of being on a train. Interesting because a train doesn't sounds like that at all. When first the front wheels of the vagoon and then, shortly after, the back wheels bumps over the joints of the rail track there's a completly different rhythm.
On MOM and TEE the kick and snare are very static. Giving an impression of a machine in constant motion. There are no fills , no rolls. That woud break the illusion. Instead the dynamic is in the hi-hat, other sounds that plays the same pattern and in delays. So the growe as a whole isn't really robotic at all. It's very much alive.
I think it's a very funky beat !
I even find it a bit addictive. Once you get started playing it...hammering away with whatever ...it's hard to stop
I'm a big fan of Kraftwerk too. Especially their first 3 albums. Autobahn, Radio Aktivität and Trans Europa Express. They're maybe not so pop-y as the later albums. But I find them more expressive, creative/innovative, conceptional and interesting.

There is 3 before that which are brilliant, Kraftwerk 1, Kraftwerk 2 and Ralf und Florian. My favourite Kraftwerk track is Kling Klang which is a sublime journey. Here's a long excerpt which has an excellent video too:sfd wrote:

I miss the Flute in later Kraftwerk, it provided so much warmth and is last heard on Autobahn

My Favourite Klaus Dinger in terms of the Motorik beat is Auto Portrait from the late 90s, sadly only an excerpt as it's about 20 minutes, it's a fascinating track - brilliant for headphones on a bus or train.

I too know abotu them. I actually have Kraftwerk 1 and 2 on Vinyl !
I'm sure you are also aware of the pre-kraftwerk The Organization.
I miss the flute too. Yes . it can be heard on the B-side of Autobahn in the track Morgenspaziergang. One of my favorite Kraftwerk songs.
They built a special "flute" later. I think one can see it in the original promo for the song Radio Aktivität.
From the earlier album I like the track Tanz Music too. Here's is a TV performance. Wolfgang Flur was first originally joining the band for this performance specially.

Yes there are a lot of great early videos that have surfaced over the last few years! I wish there as many of NEU! and La Dusseldorf. Organisation I didn't gel with so much it's a bit too busy in comparison, though an historically interesting album! I think the double edition of 1 & 2 was released around the time of Ralf und Florian, there's also a compilation from around that time (which was the first I heard of the early stuff at a friends house in the late 80s although it took me until the late 90s to get hold of the albums...)sfd wrote:It's very pleasant to meet somebody here at KVR who knows and appreciate those albums !!!Astralp wrote:There is 3 before that which are brilliant, Kraftwerk 1, Kraftwerk 2 and Ralf und Florian. It's also nice to see others on here who appreciate this stuff. Are you a member of the Krautrock group on facebook? Some interesting albums come up on there

During the tour of '91 Florian should have been able to perform with a MIDI wind controller at least

No, I was not aware of that FB group until you told me. Altought I'm into NEU!, Faust, , Amon Düül etc too - I'm not so found of the epithet Krautrock.Astralp wrote: Yes there are a lot of great early videos that have surfaced over the last few years! But I'll have to check that FB group. Thanks for the tip !
I'm also interested in Musique Concrete - Pierre Schaeffer, Karlheinz Stockhausen...
And also conceptional music in general.
But I guess I'll never be accepted as a firm and devoted believer. Becase I've never really ben a fan of Tangerine Dream.
Here's an image of the Kraftwerk double LP I own. I bought it in the mid 80s for around 500 SEK ( 60 USD ).

I've never heard of that.
However I've tried a MIDI microphone.
It was really difficult to get the notes right. One had to hold the mic very very close to the mouth. Preferable wiht your hands around it.
I never tired to stick it in my mought. That might have helped lol
Do they still make such MIDI controllers?
