The display in Live is accurate, if you run your session at 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz then the filters will be cramped unless you oversample them. This is true of The Drop as well but it isn't displayed on the filter graphic.
djscorb wrote:From the rollover tips It suggests that at least one of the models has resonance limiting (I assume in a similar fashion to the Sonalksis TBK and Vengeance filters, to stop excess resonance in the low end?)
There is one filter which is "Clean" and has no non-linearities, so letting the resonance be above 100% is bad since it would increase in amplitude exponentially and quickly clip your sound cards outputs. All the other filter models are non-linear, so the resonance saturates in different ways depending on audio input - this is what analog filters do, and the non-linear models are models of analog filters. No artificial resonance tricks are used to stop resonance in any way, it's all whatever the circuit does.

Also be sure to download the new m4l essentials. Besides the 3 new synths it looks like they added a new arp

Also reading peter kirn's hands-on with push2. It now requires an external power supply, probably to drive the new display, so no usb only operation anymore. It also doesnt support midi anymore, so no more using it with pxt either. Something to think about it since it is now definitely an ableton only device

After reading some of the comments though it seems it may still be hackable. They are sending QML files so maybe someone can set something up still but one of the comments said they hadnt figured out how to send/receive them yet. Either way its not the old sysex format it used to use. So Id still be wary if you are using push with anything but live

Thanks for the explanation Andy, love your work :)

I was thinking about buying the Drop as a Birthday present to myself later this year, the upgrade to Live's filters will keep me going until then!

It appears the Clean setting isn't backwards compatible with Auto Filter in older Live projects. It opens in a "legacy" mode when opening older sets, much as the compressor does when opening a project created pre version 9. This means you should save a rack with the legacy Auto Filter in it if you ever need to use that version. Worth knowing!

I noticed that live 9.2's improved latency handling has totally screwed with backwards compatibility on automation in older projects too.

It would be good if there was a legacy latency correction function for older projects so that automation plays back in the same manner and timing as when it was created. If anyone knows if there is a way to resolve that problem on a project or track basis it would be great!

The latency display since the last update is very welcome, it would be better still if you could have a text box displaying it and actully decide to leave latency or compensate for it manually when needed. Maybe that would resolve the timing and automation issues with older projects.

Cheers

I'm not an Ableton user but read some negative comments above concerning its browser.

Perhaps something to check out is Resonic.

Still in development but worth to check out.

Live's browser is IMO clunky but still effective and definitely not so bad I feel the need to use a 3rd party app replacement JUST for that. I do use IcedAudio AudioFinder for specific projects, but not as a browser replacement.

The browser via Push 2 is actually very nice because at the very top of the list is "User Files" so you can quickly drop presets or a sample direct from Push 2, without needing to use the computer.

That is very nice of Albeton, and what a coincidence, I was just about to start up an education project like that :D
If you own the original Push, you can save up to 30% on the new Push. Return your used unit to us, we’ll refurbish it and give it to a music education project for young people – along with copies of Live – for free.

That will be a good birthday present, The Drop is on almost every single channel in all of my projects. Seriously nice bit of kit.

I know it's a tiny thing, but having Push Scales saved to the set is a godsend - and backwards compatible with Push 1 :)

Ordered my Push 2, doing the trade in for warm fuzzy feelings.

I have to say the Live 9.5 update is totally lame. Live is stale. Period. Updates are at a snails pace, and it will never catch up to the competition, or surpass it, and be an actual modern DAW. I'm done waiting for millions of years, for an exciting update and have had it with this ugly grey crap, and the shitty Arrangement view. Studio One 3 and Bitwig run circles around this stale program in every way. Sorry if some get bent out of shape, but I had to vent. Ableton Live is literally disgusting to me in the year 2015.

Post

a heads up... it appears the Push 2 may not be fully compatible with Push1 for 3rd party apps/add-ons
see http://createdigitalmusic.com/2015/11/a ... 2339011703

not a problem if you are using Live, but if you use add-ons/apps like PXT-Live/Numerology/Liquid Rhythm it looks like you could be 'out of luck' at the moment...
creates a dilemma for me... trade in, or keep both....

So use those and be happy.

Honestly I can't stand BW bastardized version of Live UI.

I have to agree with Orbit-50

I have bought Studio One with the express intention of shifting to that in the long term. Once Bitwig has got to v2 I will probably jump ship from Ableton completely. I met Fred from Bitwig on tour and there's exciting things afoot for this software :)

The Ableton updates are all centred around pushing addons and hardware etc instead of developing Live's abilities as a serious studio machine.

Such simple things are missing. Undo history, group freeze, nested groups, group sends, assignable keyboard shortcuts to things like mute/bypass, customisable browser, the list goes on...

No way to disable / reassign the space bar to a useful function. Who ever wants to accidentally stop their set when playing live? it makes assigning keybpard triggers a minefield in a dark sweaty club environment and is about as senseless as you can get for a live performance program.

Why does live still create multiple arbitrary warp markers sometimes in long files, even when unwarped one shot is selected in prefs? This has been a bug since the start!

Why no assignable LFO module? We have to buy max, just for that? Really?!

Why does a live set created in suite open in demo mode in Standard? I have projects with friends and they have to ensure that their set doesn't contain suite devices just so I can open and save the damn thing!!! If a third party plugin is missing it just disables itself and Live gives a warning that it is missing without hampering the user in any other way. Why screw over legitimate users like that when a set contains an ableton device the user doesn't have? Why?! This is something that only screws over legitimate users as people using the crack will be using suite. It's moronic!

There is an endless list of gripes that seemingly never get addressed, perhaps because Ableton don't listen to their users and hide their forum from their site in shame due to all the frustrated users. I went on there this morning. One user and a guest online out of how many tens of thousands?

Lame.

EDIT:

And another thing...

Why can't we turn off crash reporting? So damn annoying to have it there! I find quitting or closing a set takes ages and I always force quit the program as it saves a lot of time over the course of a day. I am never going to send a crash report from something I purposely force quit so let me disable the bloody thing! What about users who don't connect their DAW to the net? What kind of useless time wasting feature is crash reporting to them?

Should 9.5 download as part of "Automatic Updates"? As it hasn't for me

I was on 9.2.1 and switched on Automatic Updates and got to 9.2.3 (via 9.2.2), but even after a few restarts no 9.5.

Has everyone got this by downloading it directly from the Ableton web site?

Post

They only just sent out the update email so my guess is they didn't turn on the auto update yet to prevent a lock up on their servers ;)

They'll probably turn it on presently.

If you're serious about working in any application, I wouldn't recommend auto updates before trying out the version with your setup. I rename Live so I can keep a stable version running when manually DLing and trying updates ;)

Cheers
