Help on midi creation/editing notes?

Hi,
I just am still feeling like I am missing out on something in midi editing in tracktion. Are there any nice little tutes on making notes, making sure they fit the bars/beats when keying notes in record...? It feels like a very tough process to zoom in, out when not even that good at knowing if the note is long enough, etc.
how do/should I set up quantization? I'm coming from a tracker background (impulse tracker for years on end) and I would like to maybe limit notes to a similar setup as that.
Please some tips?

T is not a tracker, its a sequencer... yeah you know that!rpc9943 wrote:Hi,

in trackers you can edit every single comand right there. Some of this is not possible in the same way, in a sequencer.
Editing midi in tracktion IS however in a very young stage, and will most deffinitly be uppgraded to fullfill most of most peoples wants and needs, I am shure of
If you can aford to do like me, Im playing with live 4 alongside T, while im waiting. People also speak warm of energyXT here, though I dont know much about this host.
Why am i saying this? Because T is the greatest host Ive ever used in a period of 15 years. Quantize and midi editing is unfortunately the weeker funktion in T right now, but it will change.. not over night though, like sometimes CAN happend in T land
But it will.

Theres nothing to set up, press the quantise button, to see your options.rpc9943 wrote:I just am still feeling like I am missing out on something in midi editing in tracktion.
how do/should I set up quantization?
simpe as that!
1 quantize note start times
2 quantize note lengths
3 quantize note start leaving ends intact
4 quantize note ends leaving start intact
mark the notes in the midi track, to get the menu option.
...and soon you will find out what I ment
edit: oh, and zooming, just use the scroll weel on your mouse! If you aint got one, use the arrows.

Tough it's fair to say Tracktion's MIDI editing isn't up with some other competitors, but I'd suggest new users check these up first:
1. If you're keying using a MIDI keyboard, there's a quantization setting in every MIDI input arrow that can be adjusted.
2. The piano-roll is actually 3 folds, but only have 2 enabled by default, and it's set to small/medium, which is the reason why some ppl complain about PR being "too small".
Adjust it as needed in the miscellaneous section.
3. check the key-mappings, and utilize those quick keys to focus on the clip you're working on. Using quick keys is the most crucial part of Tracktion IMHO.

i know this might sound really really stupid but in impulse tracker we used rows, and they were divided up that every 4th line is highlighted. How would I translate this into bars and beats? would I percieve the first bar as 32 rows would be in trackers?

Trackers are sophisticated step sequencers. They are typically setup to work in 1/16th's. One bar consists of 16 steps, or 16 rows in a tracker. So every highlighted row in a tracker would equal something like the following in tracktion...
bar 1 = row 1
1|2 = row 4
1|3 = row 8
1|4 = row 12
bar 2 = row 16
etc...
you can download stepchild in the link in my sig... it's a simple 32 step sequencer... create some notes, then drag n' drop the pattern into tracktion (it'll create a midi clip).. and you can see the relationship immediately. Hope that helps...

yes i have stepchild but i actually would want to work with the native midi editor. So I would set quantization to 1/16th so that it is refined down to 4 hits per beat?

you can work with stepchild and use the native quantize and stuff
just create your sequence in stepchild then use the drag n drop facility to drag the midi file over to a track in tracktion
now you can edit and quantize to your hearts content
cheers

no. to quantize to 4 hits/beat you select 1/4 beat on tracktions quantize menus. This includes the menus on the input and when quantizing notes/clips.So I would set quantization to 1/16th so that it is refined down to 4 hits per beat?
A 1/16 note is 1/4 of a beat because it is 1/16 of bar at common time. (4/4 time that is)
If you want your notes to quantize when drawing them in with the pencil, make sure snap is on ('q' toggles snapping)
If you want your notes to quantize destructively:
1. you can have them quantized while recording them (by setting quantization on the input) you can't undo this.
2. you can quantize the notes selecting them and selecting quantize > "note start/end/length" (this is in the properties panel at the bottom). You can undo this but you can't just turn it off.
You can also quantize non-destructively by setting a quantization value in the clip properties. Remember, 1/4 beat = 4 hits per beat.
btw - stepchild is for whatever you use it for. it's extremely flexible and powerful.
