Hello Melda,

I was updating my Melda plugins to version 9 and decided to test the latest MMultibandConvolution and it will not load a 32-bit IR wav file I have generated for testing.

The IR file works just fine in a couple of other convolution plugins I have. Any idea why it will not load?

It's a 32bit float. MMultibandConvolution I guess doesn't support this. I converted to 24bit and it worked fine.

I converted it to 32-bit integer and it works. Interesting thing is I have a some 32-bit float wavs that will load. Not sure why only some 32-bit float files work and some do not.

Thanks

No worries :)

If you can find examples of 32bit floats that work and dont work it might be worth posting them. We can take a look, perhaps there's a bug in the plugin or there is some format/metadata differences between the files that's causing the problem.

I'll check the problematic WAV, it's quite possible it is either corrupted, nojnstandard, compressed or something... There's quite a mess in these formats. Anyway I'd personally suggest not to use 32-bit floating point WAVs, not just because of compatibility reasons, but also if you know it won't peak, then 32-bit float is actually not much better than 24-bit integral, so it's better to use that one or 32-bit integral.

Vojtech, the IRs that come with MMultiband Convolution are FLAC files, right? Why do you use those, are they the best? I converted a .wav file to a FLAC in SONAR & it actually worked!

What's your advice here?

FLAC files are basically loselessly compressed WAVs, I like to use that for distribution, because the loading is fast, without loss of quality, and it's quite small, but generally that's the only difference to WAVs.
The problematic WAV posted here is some kind of "extended WAV format", it probably won't be supported, at least for now.

Melda,

"The problematic WAV posted here is some kind of "extended WAV format", it probably won't be supported, at least for now."

I'm not sure I understand that statement, 32-bit floating point wave files are part of the Wave standard and have been for ~15 years.

The strange wave file that I uploaded is a test IR so I can evaluate the precision of the convolver. I'm not sure if most of the people here know this but all convolvers are not created equal. You can capture an IR and somehow it might have a different character in one convolver versus another. Not naming the competition, but some convolvers have a higher noise floor than others.

The attachment is a near textbook IR wave file you can use to test the noise of a convolver. My tests show the MMultibandConvolution is excellent.

Thank you!

As for the WAV - it's not that 32-bit floats wouldn't be supported. It's that this particular one has something called "extended riff" or something enabled, I never seen that and tried to override it, but it just doesn't work for some reason. Seems a little pointless to look into this as this is so rare, it's the first time in fact.
