I have questions concerning files used in Mmultibandconvolution:
For a long time I've been working with just 1 regular WAV file to load in my Convo reverb but this is new to me:
I have a choice between L or R also Front or Rear when loading an impulse.
I guessed Left or Right ? but does'nt seem like much difference is it 2 microphones recording the IR ?
Why should I use L or R ? Front or Rear ?
Front Rear R L.gif
Also IR from Samplicity for exemple has M to S impulse. I thought it was all going to stereo anyways... Anybody can explain this ? And when should I use such an impulse ?
thanks.

I too find all this hard to grasp, but can offer some help I think.
Taking the files in your screenshot as an example.
All the files are stereo. For example, front-L is from stereo mic on left of church.
The way the files in the list are used depends on the topology you choose (Advanced Settings).

Select front-L.
Open Advanced settings but keep an eye on the Sample Graph back on the main page as you change topologies.
Choose any of the True Stereo topologies.. you'll see two blue and two red graphs, that's four IRs (Zoom in a lot to see this clearly).
Now choose any of the other topologies (Direct, Mono to Stereo etc)...you'll see just one blue and one red graph. For True Stereo topologies, the plugin has loaded two stereo IR's, front-L and front-R.
Now select front-R in the IR list. Change topologies...the graph doesn't change, just one blue and one red....so, for True Stereo you need to choose 'Left' then the plugin automatically adds the 'Right' (following a naming system).
The Bricasti Quad files amount to the same sort of thing but the four IRs are embedded in the one file.

It's worth loading the factory presets and looking at what comes up. For example, load the one in Church (modulated) ending front/rear. You'll see that Filter A has the front ones and Filter B has the rear ones.

So, think Filter first, then topology you want , then appropriate IR.

Another thing you can do to attempt to unravel these mysteries is grab four obviously different reverb IRs (like 1 sec, 5 sec, 10 sec and 20 sec), put them in a folder on your desktop, name them as front-L, front-R, rear-L and rear-R, then dial up that folder with the custom path button, then when testing all these things you'll be able to hear more clearly what's going on with the various topologies and IR choosing.

The mono to stereo Bricasti files are stereo but designed to be used in plugins that don't do quad files. They take a mono input but spit out a stereo reverb.

All of the above is just my understanding as far as it goes and I welcome further discussion.

Thanks for your good explanation ! I feel it would be great to have in depth video tutorial from Melda on this ! Also in the PDF I think it lacks some explanation or it just took for granted we are supposed to know all of this.
I had a hard time finding satisfactory explanation on the net.

It's all described in the topology parameter info. Basically there are several namings the plugin searches for and it just tries to load as many IRs as possible :).

Hover over the files panel and press F1 for more info including a description of the naming scheme.

ok thanks. Does F1 actually shows some info the question mark does'nt ? I've had different results with them.
The PDF is so loaded I had a hard time finding the section I was looking for.
I found this in the manual page 12 of MMultibandconvolution :

File mode is the most common generator, which uses recorded reverbation impulse responses. You can use any WAV/FLAC/MP3 file on your
fi
le system. You can either search for the files in the supplied file browser or drag & drop the file from your system explorer/finder onto the file
browser. This may not work in some hosts on Mac OS X though.
If
the file contains multiple channels, these will be used according to current topology. Additionally the plugin tries to find further channels from
similarly named files in the same directory according to this scheme:
xxx
1.yyy -> tries to load xxx2.yyy, xxx3.yyy...
xxx
L.yyy -> tries to load xxxR.yyy
xxx
.1.1.yyy -> tries to load xxx.1.2.yyy, xxx.2.1.yyy, xxx.2.2.yyy
This is useful when you have several monophonic samples and you want to combine them into a single filter. For example you may have
churchL.wav and churchR.wav containing recordings of 2 impulse response from a church used for left and right channel.
The plugin also provides true-stereo processing mode, in which the first 2 IRs are used for left output and next 2 IRs for right output. In this
case you may have for example 2 stereo samples church1.wav and church2.wav, where first is used to produce left output and the second
fo
r the right output.
Finally the plugin provides surround processing with up to 8 channels and since it is very unpractical to have 8 channel wave files, it's likely
you will want them to be combined from multiple mono or stereo samples such as church1.wav, church2.wav, church3.wav etc.

Boone777 asked:
"Does F1 actually shows some info the question mark does'nt ?"....good question. Usually, F1 just shows specific bits of what is in ? but in this case F1 seems to be the only way.....but I have a feeling that in older versions the ? DID have the info.

I would love to see a video covering MMultibandconvolution. It's a deep plugin with alot of possibilities. I'm fairly new to Melda plugins, but I now own 29! Great stuff!

You may be waiting a while, the tutorial videos on multi parameters just started.

I use it a lot and feel I've got a pretty good handle on it, I'm sure others on here do too... do you have any specific questions?

Post

Thanks! I may. I need to spend more time with it to avoid asking about something that would become clear with a little effort on my part. Hopefully I can use the Melda presets and just switch out the IRs to get a handle on what all the parameters do. My brain was making me think of filter A as left and filter B as right...I guess you can make them serial or parallel. I'm thinking a room IR on A and a Plate or Hall on B using stereo IRs in series or parallel would be the same as having two reverb units.

I'm trying to learn the Bricasti IRs too. They have several download options. It's been so long, I'm not sure which ones I have. 32bit 48khz would be my guess, but I may need the quad 32bit 48khz. One has two IRs each and the other has four.
