MXXX Question - LR to MS and Back

I'm trying to do something I thought would be totally easy. I put an LR to MS module in column 1. Under that is a channel volume control (with two channels having 0 dB adjustments - i.e., no effect), and under that an MS to LR module. All I hear is the left channel. If I delete the volume control module, the same result. I tried to use the utility module in place of the channel volume control module, but that made no difference. By the way, the input signal definitely has stereo content, not two identical L and R signals. MXXX is running in its global L+R default mode as well.

I would have thought that input -> LRtoMS -> MStoLR -> output would leave the signal unchanged at the output.

I've tried various other configurations like putting parallel channel volume control in column 2 and getting it to take an output from LRtoMS (hoping in would get the S signal), and a few other tricks. But there's no configuration I've tried that I can get to work. And all the time, MXXX is making its maddening demo noise, making me want to hurl my headphones across the room.. :hihi:

And as an aside, frankly, I still find the single vs. double connector lines a confusing graphic.

Thanks for any suggestions.

All you need to do is ensure there will actually be 2 lanes, check the "Sample 04 - M-S reverb". In your case the plugin doesn't really know that it should split the signal into 2, because there is nothing in the pipeline 2. It's a little grey area, one might say it should always know it, but it's kind of odd example, because you wanted some M/S processing, yet you didn't do any. So, all you need to do is place some FX in between LRtoMS -> X -> MStoLR, but there must be something mainly in the pipeline 2. When you right-click the FX, you can set from which pipeline it should get input and sidechain. Anyway there shall be some video tutorials before the preset making action starts ;).

Great. One example is probably all that's needed.

>there shall be some video tutorials before the preset making action starts

Again, great! Looking forward to them.

Was looking for the right answer. Would have never thought the split channel with FX was needed.

The reverb (side)example in mxx preset folder was a good example. Thanks

Now I want to ask: which melda plugin is best suited to mute either mid or side to really focus in?

I tried st. processor, which has default, mid and side but i would like to know which plugin is more dedicated to listen in the example of the Reverb (side) preset to the side only.

Also tried splitting the mid side using the coder in the utility x 2 like in the picture, but does not result in stereo image in a vectorscope. So I use have to use another utility to invert polarity of row 2 aka side. to return to stereo.

I am trying to find the best approach to a usable general use preset that gives me total control the right way.

A third try was with two stereo processors in signal lane 1 and signal lane 2 in mxxx. St. proc has "Default" "Mid" "Side" buttons. That allows me to split mono and stereo, but the signal in my analyzer shows irregularities like transients, punch and bass being flawed. Obviously not a good try from my side.

So maybe some advise of which mxxx insert plugins to restrict to when splitting a signal. I am quite an experimental Nerd when it comes to sound. Mxxx is so big. So many plugins have a way of seperating mids and sides that some advise which plugins to stich to would help. If I wanna process mid (side) separately with FX. Then I am not the guy that just quickly grabs an MdynamicEQ in mid/side mode and High pass the side totally away. I am pretty sure considering the Nyquist limit and anti-aliasing that would be a less accurate approach.

It could be I am overthinking and should stick to the "LR to MS" approach in the reverb preset, but there are 4 of these and I sometimes struggle which sequence to use given the sound sample in question.

I don't really follow - you should simply use the M/S approach as in the reverb example. Nyquist, antialiasing and stuff has nothing to do with any of this really ;).

I understand. Ill try to stick to the m/s approach. The anti-aliasing was in my example that the split could also be performed with for example mdynamiceq's high pass in mid side mode or some others like the stereo processor. Thank you, you answered my question already.

Though I am sure there are more ways to perform the m/s split in mxxx accurately. I have only scratched the surface of Mxxx it's the beauty and the beast in one package. I was able to get the same results as your approach with the coder in the utility. I am able to appreciate creative and out-of the box knowlegde like this. Thats why I asked ;)

EDIT:

Use "LR to MS" followed by "MS to LR". In "MS to LR" right click and set the sidechain to "2" and select "steal the sidechain"

Now any FX that are inbetween the two will be split, lane 1 is mid and lane 2 is side.

Let me know how you get on.

Today I made a gift for MXXX users. It allows the user to really focus and zoom in on the mono or side signal with the knob (50% is default, 0% is Mono, 100% is Stereo. In addition the switch will convert the mono signal to left ear and side signal to right ear. This way of listening to your favorite tracks can be very rewarding and revealing as to how the tracks were made.

I posted it on WeTransfer. After 7 days the downloads dissapears.

( I am not sure if it is allowed to post the preset via Wetransfer on this forum, but it's worth trying)

Could you please post it again? This sounds like a very usefull mxxx preset. :tu:

No worries, Not sure if its exactly the same as the original posters preset. I just made it myself, but it will do the exact same thing.
