Just because I usually don't enjoy giving up right away, I went to 32bit without midi and started painting a bit of music. I was curious about the sound design possibilities and it's a bit of a pain in my opinion and in no way elegant, but one can fairly quickly get some very, very nifty sounds with it.
I'm sure with a bit of patience and care, it could be source of great sounds. But, honestly, inviting it surely is not!

In my synth I have two possible sources for self-oscillation, creating a kind of physical modeling scenario that can bring about most fascinating and pretty sounds and I noodled around on that to make sure it gets as much a range as possible for the pitch. Boy did the BR808 not care about that, though, haha... but it does sound fun! I just felt like "braaaaggging"...no wait, I meant, speaking about my sympathy with some of that stuff in the 808.
Combine some gentle phase modulation sound with a proper biquad filter and you get a very organic sounding synth... now if only I could tune the plucked string more consistently, hahaha...
I can't quite imagine I'd do a whole song with it, but yeah... those who are comfortable with endless screwing around on designing weird and wonderful sounds, I think this is a treasure trove!

Okay, it's quick, it's dirty and it ain't elegant but here's a video that I hope will get people started who are as totally dumbfounded by this thing as I was when I first opened it up.
I will take requests for specific topics to do tutorials on if I get the time.
Hope this helps.

Trying to figure this thing out.. (I did not notice wagtunes already made a tutorial)
If you guys are using presets (one preset bank at KVR (first steps by Tinga)).. Import the bank with the import button..
Then choose the instrument from the 000 at left (it opens instrument list).. Then click on set to
channel (it is a button) and it sets it on a channel, now you should be able to hear the instruments.
Clicking on the upper right bar ( to the right of the stereo volume indicators) brings 6 different
options. Simple wav display, was display in stereo, audio channel output indicators for 16 channels,
and channel indicator where you can see what instrument is assigned to where..
The one bank uploaded to kvr uses some wavs as you can see by clicking on "samples" when you
load instrument bank (make sure the left number under channels is set to 000), so these are
not kosher on the competition right?

AHHH, Wag, YOU'RE AWESOME!
Oh man, this is like 1min into it and I can tell you right away, I'd love to see/hear a lot more of you doing tutorials! Totally delightful!!!

Waha, I couldn't agree more on the sine wave! Equally wicked is the damn reverb...pfff...even now I know only to set wet to -inf and dry to all the way up!
OH, man, I'm soooo enjoying to listen to you, man. It makes me feel nothing but joy!

Thanks Taron. I used to do this stuff all the time when I didn't have to contend with Cubase, Camtasia AND voiceovers. I'll do more if people want 'em. Anything to help wade through this maze.Taron wrote:AHHH, Wag, YOU'RE AWESOME!

This is one heavy beast.. It takes forever to save projects on my dual core celeron laptop and
flstudio 12 with 4 instances.. I probably have to do a pretty light song..
Somehow I get the idea that on some daws you can use a single instance which will play
16 different instruments. Is it possible to do that on FLstudio?

Sure, simply use the "Midi Out" plugin on FL Studio.aluode wrote:This is one heavy beast.. It takes forever to save projects on my dual core celeron laptop and

16 MIDI Out plugins + 1 BR808 instance will work like 16 BR808 instances, but using much less CPU and RAM.

Maybe I can do with one instance..

This took me a while:
In the instrument globals section you determine how much dB you want to send to the 3 FX ( Reverb Chorus and Delay) AND !!! the DRY output.
I turned off the reverb and there was no sound. turned out to be that the DRY output was set to zero !
Hope this helps anybody

Great work on the tutorial, W!
Did notice a few differences from my own experience so far.
There is actually a dedicated modwheel choice in the matrix, dubbed MODULATION.
Synthetis option is only for when routing between oscillator, SUBTRACTIVE is a bit of a red herring, meaning mathematically, and shouldn't be confused with what is commonly referred to as subtractive synthesis.
I have only used one filter so far but to my experience all oscillators goes through that filter. Don't know what happens if you add more... 8 filters in serial does not seem immediately useful to me. I'd love to be able to route these properly.
I don't think the modulation sources are connected to the oscillators by number. It's all controlled by the modulation matrix where you can pick an index for both source and destination.
Oh, and Taron, you can disable the reverb an the first page by bringing down the reverb slider and up the output slider.
Must say this thing sounds really good one you actually get some sound out of it

Yeah, I'm sure there are things that can be done differently and more efficiently but I'm at that stage where I'm just glad I can program basic sounds out of it.mehum wrote:Great work on the tutorial, W!

I have tested multiple filters and there is no question, at least the way I have this setup, that each filter only affects the oscillator associated with it.
I'll do more testing just to make sure but I'm pretty convinced that's how it works. Either that, or I did something very quirky to get it to do what I got it to do.

@wagtunes: perhaps it works that way when activating more than one filter then. I'm in bed now so will have to check it out tomorrow

That's what I wrote: Wet down to -infinity and Dry up. Why [x]active on reverb would turn off the whole sound is anybody's guess, hahaha.mehum wrote:

You can set targets to the modulations, by the way, targeting specific oscillators or filters and so on, just like you can pick specific envelopes. It is actually rather nice, but NOT NEAT. It's really, really coarse. But as you've said, it can get some really interesting sounds. It's sensitive, though, pretty shaky as though it was soon to blow a fuse or so, haha.
Anyway, after I pulled myself together for 5 minutes and went 32bit, it took only 5 more minutes to pretty much understand this whole thing give or take a few of the weirder effect section and the detailed filter options. I so understand why he did that, haha, I was gonna add a number of options into mine, too, but decided to just stick with my own invention on the filter. I might add moog, though... sry, babbling to myself.
