But why is the archive filled with a lot of "junk" files, icudt51.dll et al and 7zip files, all that is needed for Kontakt inside that downloaded archive are the zipped files containing samples and nki files

It's an installer. I guess for those who just want an easy way to get the samples into Kontakt without having to look up or remember where they're supposed to go.

Indeed it is. Is there any reason to own Dune 1 if one owns Dune 2 and is not going to use preset libraries?
