So. It looks like one of the bands I was in in high school is doing a reunion later this year, oddly enough. (Just for the record, that's a long long long long long long time ago...) So far, the music people have proposed is stuff we used to do, some still very cool -- Paul Butterfield, Sons of Champlin, Johnny Winter, Sly -- some less so to me. But besides that, I've been wondering what more current music we might be interested in.

The band has a horn section, and especially without our Hammond guy who's so far MIA, that's a pretty important part of what that band was/is. I hadn't really thought about it until this came up, but apparently I don't listen much to current horn section bands these days, except for some jazz, which this isn't. It's possible I'm just drawing a blank and that's not actually true, but I haven't come up with anything so far.

So please recommend me so great current(-ish) bands with a horn section and vocals, ideally male, or doable in some way by a guy. Not real jazz I think (though the one guy who's still doing music full time is all about that), more rock/funk/blues, more high energy than not.

Then again, whatever's cool, we'll sort it out.

Budos Band:

This is just one picked at random, they have many other tunes of similar quality. No vocals though.

Trombone Shorty:

Vocals sometimes.

Thanks, both cool.

I realize though that I should have said I'm mostly looking for tunes with vocals, ideally male, or doable in some fashion by a guy. Editied first post, in case people don't read past there.

Thanks, great stuff! Checking out their album...

One more thing I should have added: Not an absolute requirement, but I'd like to find at least some new stuff that people might know. All these suggestions (PM too) have been very cool, but the band always tried to do a mix of obscure and well-known stuff, and all the recent-music suggestions have been things I wouldn't expect people to be familiar with, though maybe I'm just old and narrow.

Thanks again, keep 'em comin'

HAKEN use a horn section in a few of their songs, but not all of them, sadly. For starters, though, you can check out these songs (with horn sections) by them:

My solo projects:
Hekkräiser (experimental) | MFG38 (electronic/soundtrack) | The Santtu Pesonen Project (metal/prog)

^^^ Thanks, interesting to me personally, but not what we're looking for. More roots/pop I guess.

Janelle Monae?

Sorry, I know you said guy singers. These would be known by at least some people, but probably not a ton.

And seriously, Justin Timberlake and his band f**k shit up something serious here:

Ok, really big points for infectious upbeat vibe, and all stuff I know, thank you!

Back on the ground, not sure we can pull any of those off, for various reasons (much smaller band, for one thing, and not being Justin Timberlake), but definitely in the right ballpark.

Only thing that might be missing is great actual songs. These performances are very cool, vibe is great, but we might need more of a song to hook onto, being just us guys. Stranger To My Happiness maybe, but the others are more just grooves. Awesome though.

I'll take listen to some more of all these folks, see if there are other songs that might apply.

Definitely these kinds of feels though, cool.
