I would argue that he turned it into a musical effect (see genres other than idm, glitch)
Yeah that's more of what I mean. I'm not familiar enough with early IDM to say if no one else was doing it or not, but I don't know if anyone was using stutter edits on musical phrases the way he has back then (see his TBU album). He didn't invent the effect, but he definitely gave it a unique, musical character that became an indistinguishable part of his sound. And no one ever did shit this crazily intricate to a vocal line before him:

https://soundcloud.com/bt/bt-somnambulist-simply-being

I feel like in the midst of his well-earned feelings of accomplishment over his personal innovations he can occasionally get carried away and proclaim that he's obtained firsts where he hasn't (even if he's put them together in a way that's unique). I'm pretty sure 80% of what he was saying BreakTweaker was the absolute first to do (high-resolution beat subdividing past the 16th and advanced polymetrics) have been achieved many times elsewhere before, but I can grant that that instrument does it's thing better than everything else of its kind, even if it wasn't the first to do them.

Anyways, he's an interesting fellow, appears to maintain quite a free spirit in the midst of his tremendous experience (I think the best way to describe him is as a personification of the phrase "musical freedom") and his sound been a huge inspiration to me for years now. I really hope I get to meet him one day, after my music has hopefully caught his attention :D

Damn sorry, double post.

I like the idea of this, because convolution is quite an interesting effect, and plugins that present something in a simple and quick interface can be quite inspiring sometimes.

And while they have some nice ideas they will be implementing (eg inertia to bounce stuff around the place), the demo just didn't sound that great - I dunno whether it was a poor choice of loops but Spitfire, knowing they were taking this to Namm, should have at least sorted out, like other companies do, a few preset demo patches that show off this thing sounding really cool and interesting - then at least you have people's interest to follow along how it develops.

As it was, it really sounded very underwhelming.

I have a lot of respect for BT though, he's an excellent musician and created his own sound and trademarks in EDM, and that's not something that many people do (99% of EDM folks just stick to the same paths of copying whatever everyone else is doing). BT has his own voice, and that's pretty hard to do in contemporary EDM.

We'll see how this one turns out...

Well, now we are obviously well into the subjective realm, but for me it's the opposite and that he took it into a more random sounding unmusical thing (which is usually what happens with the stutter tools also if you are not patient).

The track you show to here is from 2003?

This track is from the same year, and builds on a decade of stuttering before it :)

yep, subjective alright. that thing makes me go "this cd is scratched beyond repair". whereas the pre-TBU stuttering BT did by hand, without Stutter Edit, still leaves me largely in disbelief and awe.

So with a one page ad in latest Computer Music, and a video teaser on Spitfire Audio webpage, when is this gonna be released?

Price? I bet regular will be more than $200

Features

***Subject to change prior to release****
• Over 20GBs of WAVs from BTs Archive
• Load 4 sets of sounds and have them convoluted through 3 different IR signals, all chosen from the same selection of content.
• Dynamically control the mix and amount of convolution on each sound
• Vast array of control over both the IR and the sound source itself.
• Use a beat as an IR, or as a sound source or both! Create unique textures and soundscapes using this revolutionary technology.
• Programmed from the ground up as a standalone application and plugin.
• More features coming soon…
I know some have said they were underwhelmed with the initial videos, but I'm looking forward to learning more.

4 different sources and then, it looks as the though the triangle is for morphing between the three different convolution/impulse response signals.

The big questions for me relates to modulation sources/destinations and then if the plugin is locked to BT's content, or if there is an easy way to import both the source material as well impulse responses.

Seeing as how they are touting this product as one that builds on the eDNA release, I find it difficult to imagine they have not given this some interesting modulation tools. At least I hope they are there.

Otherwise, as for price, I won't be surprised if this is in the £199 - £299 on release. eDNA 01 is priced at £149, and while being a large library, its equally one of the lowest priced, which I guess is related to the idea of marketing to the EDM producer crowd.

Hopefully more info comes out soon.

Spitfire and BT aim high, creating the next best thing after "digital"

First there was analogue, then there was digital, next up convolution.

Bending the concepts of loops, tonal sound and impulse responses [Phobos is] the world’s first 'poly-convolution instrument.'

For what it's worth, BT did a FB livestream today and he said it would be released this Friday, October 14th, coinciding with the release of his tenth studio album.

I just posted this another Phobos thread... posting here too as i don't know which i the correct one.

I bought Phobos and my advise would be... don't!
The VST doesn't appear in Ableton Live 9.7.1 on mac and the AU crashes Komplete Kontrol and Logic...
The sounds are nice before it crashes but the GUI is hard to read it's so small.

This was my first and last Spitfire Audio purchase i'm sorry to say. Sad Face...
