Loudness wars, dynamics and limiting

I notice that your limiters talk about winning the loudness wars, but that you also have a number of plugins for dynamics. I am curious how to have a good dynamic balance in a track, that is still appropriately loud. Is such a thing possible, or are they just two different things. I am a little fatigued by the loudness wars, and want a strong mix with a lot of variety of dynamics.

Well, the marketing is all about loudness wars, but I'm not a fan either. In any way you cannot have both. If you want lots of dynamics, then actually what you want to do is do nothing
. Particularly, don't use compressors & limiters too much
. As simple as that

Thank you for that very honest and helpful reply.MeldaProduction wrote:Well, the marketing is all about loudness wars, but I'm not a fan either. In any way you cannot have both. Just some thoughts I have, regarding this:
I like to set up my mix with the MLoudnessAnalyzer. My goal always is to have some instruments at specific levels around 0 LU / -23 LUFS. I also try to use not much compression. In the end I bring it up with several plugins (e.g. MUltraMaximizer is just a great tool to me!) - but this depends on the wishes of the clients for example. In most cases I try not to be too loud so that I can preserve some dynamic ... on the other hand (damn it loudness-war marketing stuff!!) most people still "need" louder music so that they take it "serious" ... unfortunately.
But in the very end it should be something you like - I would not compare too much with other artists / professional mixes, since it can easily bring you on a wrong way. Well ... I spend too much time already to compare mixes ... I am not sure if it's worth the time, haha. Just trust yourself.
Ps: Vojtech does not like the loudness war! Good to hear, great!

Thank you Tagirijus. A good way to approach things. I was interested by the fact that Melda makes a plugin that has the word dynamic and limiter in the title.Tagirijus wrote:Just some thoughts I have, regarding this:

MDynamics is just a compressor, if you refer to this tool. In the end it's just what it is: a tool. You decide what you will do with it.

I actually meant MDynamicsLimiter.Tagirijus wrote:MDynamics is just a compressor, if you refer to this tool. In the end it's just what it is: a tool. You decide what you will do with it.

MDynamicsLimiter is also just a limiter, I guess. Well at least it's also just a tool you can use.
... sorry, if I may not get the problem here.
... if it's just the name "dynamic" ... I assume it's just a name refering to the usage for these tools: affectign the dynamics of the signal.

There is not really a problem. I just thought that Melda had created a magic product that could maintain all the dynamic range of older albums with the loudness and clarity of new ones. A dynamic sausage maker.Tagirijus wrote:MDynamicsLimiter is also just a limiter, I guess. Well at least it's also just a tool you can use.

That‘s physically not really possible (depends of the dynamic range of the source, of course). Either you'll have a sausage or good dynamics. d-:
Maybe you could try MUltraMaximizer. To me this tool does indeed magic, if you really need the stuff just loud with nearly no or at least less distortion than I achieved with any limiter.

I find my newly bought MDynamicsLimiter excellent for cutting peaks and that of course then makes it possible to raise the volume.
Those peaks don't contribute with anything in the sound and just takes up headroom so I think that this is meaningful to do even if you want a dynamic mix.
