Both Zebra2 and Zebra HZ are suddenly playing with crackling noise every 30 sec or so. My Zebra 2 installation shows the registration. I have upgraded both synths as the updates have come out. Any thoughts why I would be getting the period crackling noise now? What can I do to stop this and restore the synths to function properly?

I doubt very much that this was demo crackling, because Zebra2 is about our only product that doesn't have demo crackling. The demo limitation in Zebra2 is that it starts detuning. 
Sounds to me like your machine was under some kind of stress, maybe a background process like a virus scan or just an open Firefox living out its Gigabytes-of-RAM hunger. Something like that could compromise a system's performance and maybe lead to short dropouts and crackling noises under the right circumstances, and it would probably disappear again after rebooting.
