would you ever recommend some types of controllers to control the virtual ribbon...other than PB or MW ?

interesting...

You can use the mouse.

This video will show you how to automate Blackhole (using the "Extraordinary Spaces" presets).

This will work for any presets as long as they have been pre-programmed for the ribbon.

For the current price of less than 50$ I can feel GAS coming up, but iLok is keeping me back ... :help:

GAS = Blackhole ..

[i had the choice of hardware iLok or software activation in the LicenceManager. (If you mean that)]

With that demo they are losing sales.

Has somebody compared it a bit deeper with ValhallaShimmer?
The time Blackhole was released and I've tested it, for me there was not such a big difference with the "dark" mode in Shimmer.

Hi
Simon did:

As far as controllers... I've been recently considering a Theremin. Not just for Blackhole but for other things as well. Kind of pricey for use just as a controller, but it seems that it would be very cool. I've started keeping an eye out for a used one. :)

Yes, I heard this and Blackhole sounds for me smoother and more defined. But Sean stated that it needs some different settings (dark mode and other things) so my idea is that Shimmer sounds very similar/close but it needs different settings.

Btw... I found this preferred settings from Sean:
Start with ValhallaShimmer, select the BlackHole preset, and set the color mode to Dark. This is pretty close, both sonically and structurally, to the Eventide Blackhole plugin. A few more hints:

- Set the pitch mode to bypass. This will result in similar feedback behavior in both Shimmer and Blackhole. I'm not sure where the Blackhole algorithm routes its feedback, but it may be similar to how it is done in the mono reverb mode in Shimmer.

- The Gravity knob in Blackhole corresponds to a few preset values of Diffusion in ValhallaShimmer, with negative values of Gravity roughly corresponding to values around 0.5 to 0.618 in Shimmer, and positive Gravity values covering Diffusion in the 0.9 to 0.99 range in Shimmer.

- Bring the high cut down a little bit in Shimmer, to approximate the filtering in Blackhole.

- Play with the mod depth in Shimmer to approximate the Blackhole sound.

I have to be honest - I didn't want to choose either hardware nor software since I already have the eLicenser incl. Software License Manager plus some other BS running on my system already which hooks up to the system and wastes precious resources :)

So I first wanted to take a look at the demo to see how smooth it is, but now get the point that Scotty mentioned (if I am not mistaking) - I really do need an iLok account to try a demo, and Eventide tries to convince me it's best to prepare an Eventide account beforehand?

That is not the way I imagined things :hihi:

I've not had any iLok problems lately and Blackhole activated just fine. Don't let it hold you back :)

Let just say if it isn't obvious that blackhole does not make pitch transposition, that is included in the shimmering effects that sean described in this atypical reverb unit

Blackhole has a fantastic engine though, but does not have a same focus than valhallashimmer on that respect, mind you

Post

Yeah, correct me if I'm wrong but Blackhole may produce harmonics/octaves as a byproduct of its algorithms, whereas Valhalla Shimmer specifically sets out to add precise pitchshifting to the wet signal. Which actually makes them quite different/complementary. Both are Epic.
